Moving to Germany

I am moving to Germany. Can I buy an Android phone in the states and use it in Germany with a different SIM card?

You might take a look at each one of these i know it's not much help but as i said i have never had to cross that Bridge of going over seas. Short answer "No"  Buy a phone from AT&T and unlock it if you want full use of your phone.

Long Answer :

No.  Verizon uses CDMA as it core radio.  All Verizon phones except their global line does not have the required radios in order to work.  You would need to be with Verizon and in good standing to unlock them, and you will have to pay the termination fee when you do leave so buying a global device within the US will cost you more than moving to Germany and then purchasing a device over there.

And even longer answer might be to purchase an unlocked phone with the radio bands (especially 3G radio bands) that will work on AT&T and the GSM network in Germany. Getting an SIM unlock code from AT&T can be be just as challenging with all their exclusive phones and having to wait until that exclusivity period ends before asking for the code.

Tidbit is correct, CDMA devices do not have the correct signal reciever to use the GSM network the you would have to use in Germany..

They could probally buy a unlocked GSM device somewhat cheap from Craiglist or ebay that should work but like you pointed out Ann it NEEDS TO BE A 3G device because 4G devices usually wont work well on another carrier...  

I bought my lady friend a Samsung Vibrent for 80.00 and got unlock for 5.00 off market and the device handles calls without issues but data is hit and miss sometimes.
