Moto Droid vs. Droid Eris: Which One's Better and Why?

Pardon me if this has already been asked in an ealier thread, but...

I keep reading about how the Moto is more powerful the the HTC droid.

But, besides screen size and resolution, their stats are practically the same.

What are the strengths that the Moto Droid has over the Droid Eris?

The processor, the RAM and ROM are very different, as well as the native OS that it runs.

Overall I'd say the Droid is worthwhile, as it's on stock UI and it has a completely faster processor.

How are the processor, RAM and ROM different?

Different makers? Or what?

They don't give too many specific stats about the RAM and ROM.

It still looks like they're pretty even.

Some areas the Eris looks better, some the Moto looks better.

Still not really convinced the Moto is the better Droid.

I'm thinking they're pretty even in terms of performance.

The only thing is the Eris runs on 1.5 (cupcake), as opposed the the Moto with 2.1, but most likely that will be updated soon too.

Factually, the Droid is better, if anything because of the native, clean UI and the fact that it has a better processor. I think the Eris has more RAM, but that's because it needs it to support the sense UI. The Droid I believe has more ROM, meaning your'e able to store more applications, and since the processor is faster, so will be the overall experience of the phone.

The Droid not only has a better resolution size, and screen size, but even the type of glass that it's created with is better.

Everything about the Droid points to the fact that the Droid is better. Screen resolution, size, specs matter.

And besides, if you wanted the Eris, go wait for the Incredible to be released.

Im actually amazed.. despite all the advantages of the droid.. the little guy can run flash.. yet any availability forthe Droid is always TBA.

Just plain sad

In laymen terms, here is why the Moto-Droid's hardware is better -

  • Dedicated Graphics Processor (GPU) - means fasters screen refreshs and gaming
  • Larger screen
  • Cortex 8 Processor - CPU speed is close to Eris, but the Cortex is a newer type of CPU that is over-all faster.

These are the optional user defined preferences that really don't make the phone better or worse

  • Keyboard
  • 16gb Micro SDCard - Eris has 8gb
  • 2.0/2.1 Google OS - Eris is on 1.5 HTC Sense, but will be updated someday to 2.1 (there is a leaked version that seems legit)

To me, the main differences (for the average user) between the Droid and Eris is dedicated GPU that makes the MotoDroid scream for programs that can use that hardware, the larger screen and the keyboard. Everything else is user preference IMHO.

The CPU in the Motorola Droid is a Cortex A-8 based processor, as compared to the ARM-11 cored processor in the Droid Eris.

This is similar to comparing a Pentium 4 and a Pentium Core2 processor in terms of how many calculations it can make "per clock cycle".

The Cortex series of processors can make 2 to 2 1/2 times more calculations per clock cycle than the ARM-11 processor, so even though the processors are very similar in their clock speed, the Motorola Droid's processor is about twice as fast at processing stuff than the Eris's processor.  In other words, the Eris' processor would have to be running around 1.2 GHz to match the speed of the  Motorola Droid.

That explination of processors and such makes me hot and bothered.

You have won my heart, BKFist. And 10 internets. What will you do with them?
