May be switching from iOS to Android...Any VZW Feedback?

<Discussion moved from to space for more exposure.>

I've been an iOS user since the iPhone 3 had have been a VZW customer for 5+ years.  No issues with the Apple, just looking to change and thinking Android would be more customizable and fun to work with.  Guess I'm a little bored with the iPhone.  BUT, looking at some of these discussions and reading reviews has me hesitating due to several VZW policies.  Namely, what concerns me the most and sorry for the long list:

1) VZW bloatware and the inability to remove it.  Do all phone brands get the VZW add-ons and how intrusive are those apps really?

2) System upgrades seem to take VZW way too long to approve and make available.  True?

3) Targeting the Samsung GS4, Motorola Maxx, Galaxy Note 2 or Google Nexus (if available).  Is one better than the other on VZW?

4) Would a move to T-Mobile, AT&T or Sprint be a wiser choice for an Android device?

Would certainly appreciate any feedback you would be willing to provide!

Bloatware and updates are non-issues for me.  I like my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx and am partial to Motorola.  Verizon has the best network available.

You could have posted this under the general Android space since it is a general android question.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I'm answering these questions as someone who peruses forums.  I don't have a phone on Verizon Wireless.  I do use Android phones on other carriers.

1)  Verizon Wireless adds apps to all of the Android phones that I know of.  With the newer Android devices, you can disable most (if not all) of the apps, but they are still on your phone.  Different people have different tolerances for the intrusiveness of the apps and the requested updates.

2)  People on all of the carriers complain about how long the updates take to get to their devices.  An example is for the Galaxy Note II.  Verizon Wireless released theirs with the Multi-Window function; it was also the last carrier to release the Note II.  None of the other carriers' Notes II had Multi-Window at release; those users had to wait for updates.  Once the update happened, it seems that Multi-Window had more functionality on the other carriers' versions than on the VZW version.

3)  Which phone is better is an opinion that varies with the users.

4)  I wouldn't recommend going to another carrier for the Android experience in general.  If you care about locked bootloaders, VZW isn't your carrier.  However, it usually doesn't take long for the development community to develop an unlock for the bootloaders.  If using a Nexus 4 is important to you, it is not available for the CDMA carriers, but GSM carriers only.

Gotcha.  Didn't see the 'start discussion' on the Android space.  Will post it there. Can this be deleted from here?   Thanks

The moderators have already moved the thread for you.  You don't have to do anything.

Some of these are issues of personal preference, and since there really isn't much "try before you buy" with smartphones, it can be hard to know what works best for you. VZW does have a 14-day return period, however.

1) All Android phone carriers add crap/bloatware to their phones, or so I've heard. The do it because the app makers pay them to do so, and supposedly it reduces the cost of the phone. (Like they weren't going to get that back from our monthly fees anyway.) In current Android phones, you can disable preinstalled apps, though I don't think you can remove them entirely. You can remove their shortcuts from your home screen, though, and create folders in the Applications area that will hide them.

2) Don't really have any experience to comment from here.

3) Which phone to buy absolutely depends on your preferences for looks, the way it feels in your hand, and how you like to work and/or play. Read up on the phones and make sure you know what you're really looking for before you go to a store. Do as much trying out in the store as they will let you. Don't listen much to what salespeople say. They generally try to sell you a more expensive phone, which may or may not meet your needs.

4) As for VZW vs. T-Mobile, AT&T or Sprint, it depends partly on where, how, and when you'll be using the phone. VZW does have a larger network for both voice and 4G data. We get reception at a rural place in the western North Carolina mountains on VZW that we could not get on AT&T. But our daughter says her Sprint-network phone works there too. Ask people you know who use their phones where you intend to use yours and see what carriers they like or dislike.

One last thing: this is a forum mainly focused on problem-solving, so what you're going to hear here is mostly people having problems. It doesn't necessarily reflect the overall user experience, though it may show where some special weak spots are.

If you have the time to watch some videos (I recommend this), check out phonedog.com.  Particularly for points #1 and #3, you can see the subtle differences between the phones in the review videos and the Dog Fight videos.  Many times, Phonedog will also do an unboxing of the carrier-specific devices so that you can see the bloatware that comes on these.

Nothing beats going to a store to play with one, but the videos can help you narrow down your choices before you go to the store for your own hands-on time.

2) System upgrades seem to take VZW way too long to approve and make available.  True? Again, it's an issue with every carrier (and android in general). however, verizon does seem to be slower than the rest. in most cases, the updates don't provide anything noticeable to the average user, but to the fanatics, it's an issue.

3) Targeting the Samsung GS4, Motorola Maxx, Galaxy Note 2 or Google Nexus (if available).  Is one better than the other on VZW?  i would suggest playing aroung with them in the store. you will notice that each manufacturer lays a different UI on top of android. for example, samsung uses what they call "touchwiz" and HTC uses "sense" (not sure what motorola calls theirs anymore? it used to be "blur"). the UI has different styles of widgets on each manufacturers, as well as a slightly different look and feel. the nexus line is what is considered "vanilla android" (no additional UI placed on top of basic android OS). in short, an android from HTC looks and feels considerably different than samsung in terms of function.

i have the note II and love it and my wife has the gsiii and loves it. however, i also loved both of my HTC's and by all accounts the newer motorolas are very nice. this is why i suggest playing around with them first. while i like the size on the note ii, you really need to hold it and use it, as it is absurdly large to hold in your hand (it's simply not a one handed device).

4) Would a move to T-Mobile, AT&T or Sprint be a wiser choice for an Android device? i pick my carrier based on coverage as opposed to phone selection. verizon gets different models than the others. some manufacturers put a line of phones on every carrier (siii and noteii), and sometimes they make specific models for specific carriers. some would say verizon has the better options, while others prefer models on other carriers. the thing is that as often as new models are released, there will almost always be a slightly nicer phone somewhere else, shortly after you get whatever you get (in my opinion, the HTC incredible was the best android when it launched and was on verizon, but shortly after it launched, sprint got the EVO, which was much nicer. verizon also launched the htc thunderbolt, which was the first LTE phone anywhere. but then they did NOT get the galaxy sii and did not get a version of the HTC One last summer.) i go with verizon for the network. if cost is important, than they may not be for you.

Would certainly appreciate any feedback you would be willing to provide!

I was an iPhone user on Verizon for over 3 years as well, but recently switched to the Galaxy Note 2 and absolutely love it. I was a complete Android virgin but found the OS intuitive (4.1.1) and very user friendly.  Not to mention, unlike IOS, you have the ability to actually make your phone personal and not a robotic clone of all of the other orchard eaters.
