Lollipop disabled the volume on phone calls

After upgrading to Lollipop my s4 phone calls do not work. The speaker is fine and works with any other application. Sometimes phone calls work but most of the time there is no sound. Resetting the phone occasionally fixes the problem but it always comes back. Any ideas how to fix or how to roll back to kitkat?

Sounds like you have done most everything other than a system cache clear or a factory reset.

System Cache Clear

Turn off phone

Remove the battery and reinsert.

Hold down the Home and Volume Up keys

Press and hold the Power button while still holding the other keys.

As soon as you see the Samsung logo, release all keys/buttons.

Press on the Volume Down to scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition.

Press the Power button to select it.

Press the Volume down button to highlight "Yes" and press the Power Button to select it.

Wait for a few minutes for the phone to clear the data.

Then press the Power button to select reboot system now.

Wait for your phone to reboot.

Factory Data Reset

The following process has helped many, maybe you can benefit from this as well.  I know you don't WANT to FDR, but if you haven't already, this might be a NEED to operation.

Plug into charger for the entire process

(DISABLE google backup and restore of apps and app data)

Charge to 100% and back up and factory reset the phone

Factory reset one more time

Unplug from charger

Set up your phone

Leave phone on until it dies and turns off 1 time

Leave off and recharge to 100%

This is my usual process and I have had no issues.

I've done a FDR about a week ago and it didn't help. Will try the cache today.

Yes, BUT, did you do it as I stated above?  The big thing is (DISABLE google backup and restore of apps and app data).

Most people fail to take that step.

I hesitate to guarantee, but it seems to have worked for A LOT of folks.  Reason being is that the format of some apps changed with the update and the system as a whole and sometimes old restored app data corrupts.  That in turn causes problems.
