How to make the audio come out the earpiece instead of speaker on Droid Eris??

Howdy Y'all, first time poster on this forum...looks helpful.  Got Eris's for myself and my daughter around the holidays and we both continue to be "wowed" by this phone on a daily basis.  What a fantastic piece of technology!  Makes my wife's WinMo phone look like a total turd by comparison.

My question is this, when watching a Youtube (or any other video for that matter) video, the sound always comes out the speaker on the backside of the phone, rather than out of the earpiece which of course is on the side of the phone facing you.  I work in a fairly noisy environment and find it almost impossible to see and hear the vid without putting something behind the phone to reflect the sound back to me.  Is there a way to make the accompanying audio come out the earpiece on the front side instead of the speaker on the backside?  A solution to this dilema would be AWESOME, as it's one of the few gripes I have with this phone.

TIA,

D Dave

The problem you describe is not unique to the Eris. My Blackberry Storm also plays video/music audio through the speaker on the back of the phone. I agree with you that there should be a way to use the speaker on the front, but alas I can't figure it out either on the Droid Eris phone I've been playing with the past couple of days. Even with a bluetooth (mono) earpiece paired, the audio still comes out the back of the speaker. When you press the Menu key, there is no option to change the audio settings.

What about using a corded headset:smileyhappy:

The problem is that the speaker on the back of the phone, and the ear-piece speaker are 2 completely different critters.  The ear piece speaker is not designed to have a high enough volume level even if you could make that the active speaker.  Compare this by going into a phone call, put the phone on the desk and try to listen to the caller, then hit the speakerphone button where it re-directs the sound to the larger/louder speaker on the back of the unit.

The other poster is correct, get a headset, or if you can not wear a headset at work, get a cheap pair of external speakers, like the little $10 "junk" speakers designed to play an ipod "out loud" and plug it into the headset jack.  They are usually just a couple inches across, and can be found at places like Dollar General, or Wally World.  They don't need to be powered to give you enough volume just to listed to youtube :smileyhappy:  Of course, if you are in a desk situation where you CAN use some powered speakers, a $20 pair of powered "PC" speakers will give you some really decent sound.
