I have received a replacement droid 4 and have followed the video tutorial for taking the sim card out of my old phone and putting it in the replacement one but the replacement phone isn't seeing it. any ideas?

Did you get the SIM installed? Be sure it is seated fully - and that you haven't touched the gold contact area. You may need to get a replacement SIM (they are free at a Verizon store).

They are free at Corporate Verizon stores; retailers usually charge for them.
