You can't
To be more specific Italy and France do not have any CDMA towers. You would have to have a phone equiped with a GSM radio to be able to use it internationally. Verizon currently does not have any internationally capable Android phones.

Check WiFi capabilities at the locations you are staying...A lot of European hotels do NOT offer free WiFi like they do here in the States and its not cheap either, sometimes as much as $15 per day. It may not even be worth powering it up over there...
