I just got the Stratosphere. Is there a way to automatically have the phone unlock when a text comes in? The phone automatically unlocks when a call comes in but not a text. I looked through the manual and either it is not in there or I missed it,. Thanks

I don't believe there's a way to do this on the phone as-is. But you might check Google Play to see if there's a third-party messaging app that can do it.

Thanks I kind of figured I would get an answer like this. A third party messaging app? I am new to smart phones. Would this allow a third party access to my messages?

yes, it would allow access. it is part of the permissions. i use handcent. it's widely used and trusted. no matter what you use, someone has access (verizon, google, the developer of the actual SMS app, etc). i'm not sure if hancent will do exactly what you are looking for, but i know on my tbolt that i have it set up for "quick message" or "quick reply" or something like that......so the incoming text just shows up on my screen (without unlocking it) and i can reply directly to it (without unlocking it).

No, that means an app provided by a "third party," i.e., not by Verizon or you. The Google Play online store (formerly known as the "Android Marketplace") has thousands of such applications, many free (but with ads), many more for a dollar or two. There's lots of fun stuff, and lots of junk too. But each app has a set of user reviews that can help you make a decision. (Do beware of "battery-saver" apps; these have a bad reputation for slowing down your phone and actually doing more harm than good.)

Either go to https://play.google.com/store on your computer, or use the Google Play app on your phone. You can search for "messaging" and find apps to look over. If you download and install an app and then find you don't like it, you can always uninstall it. Other people here (not me, unfortunately) may be able to jump in and recommend specific messaging apps that do what you want (if there are any).

Welcome to the smartphone world! I've been a Palm Treo user for over 10 years, but switched to Android for the first time a few months ago. You'll be amazed by some of the handy things these devices can do.

Thanks. I may go ahead and try it. Really what could it hurt right? Since it is an app I can always delete it if I don't like it or it is not working the way I thought correct?

So far I love the Stratosphere. Makes me a bit nervous seeing the bad comments people are making about the phone shutting down automatically etc. But so far (I have only had it for 6  days) I like it alot. Thanks for all your help.

Robn was asking whether "third party" meant that the maker of the app would have access to the content of her text messages. Are you saying that that is the case? The statement that "someone has access" seems awfully broad.

Right -- despite all the references to what "malicious apps" might be able to do, all of these permissions are necessary for a legitimate SMS app to do what it does, along with the few extra things that Handcent does. But none of that, as far as I can tell, indicates that someone at Handcent (or Verizon) is going to be intercepting your messages and examining the content, which I think is what Robn was concerned about.

Anyway, thanks for the detail. If I ever get more into texting than I currently am, I may look into Handcent. It was interesting to note the info about disabling keylock: "Allows the app to disable the keylock and any associated password security. A legitimate example of this is the phone disabling the keylock when receiving an incoming phone call, then re-enabling the keylock when the call is finished." That sounds like Handcent would do what Robn is interested in, unlock the phone as soon as a text comes in.
