http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2010/04/22/htc-lets-down-hero-users-yet-again/
Folks, I'm getting tired of trying to figure out who is at fault. As a couple of you know, I've been trying to take VZW to task for no Eris update, which some of you have somehow found perplexing and/or offensive. I've basically been told to shut up and live with it. It boggles the mind.
Anway, the Hero is essentially the same phone as the Eris in a different shell. If this article is to be believed, HTC has pushed back the 2.1 release to May or June, which is most likely when VZW will get their hands on it, so expect it a few months later than that at the earliest to allow for VZW's acceptance process.
Other than having the 2nd gen sidekick, this is my first real smartphone. I'm getting sick of having a computing device that relies so heavily on companies who are too quick to move on to their next sales target, leaving their existing customers tethered to a contract and grasping at straws - and it only took 4 months. Hooray for smartphones.

The Hero is essentially the same phone as the Eris with a different shell. Eris also has soft buttons instead of actual hardware buttons for home, menu, back, and search. Otherwise they are pretty much identical. I doubt very much that HTC is creating completely different builds for phones that are exactly the same, so more than likely, the hero update awaited by Europe is almost certainly the same update we are waiting for on the Eris.

And the bands are different. And the kernel. And the way they give OTA with the providers. Example: Sprint is having trouble releasing the 2.1 update to the Eris because of the way they do OTA updates. They said somewhere that because the update was larger than 10MB or so, they couldn't push it out. They were even debating on having users come to the stores for a manual update. That's just on Sprint.
Secondly, with the Eris, Verizon's testing process is completely different and requires a bit more work considering thier huge network.
The phones may be the same in spirit, but look under the hood and test processing, and you'll see it's a bit more complicated than cosmetic differences.

Thank you, Nonie3234, for your faith in me.
It bothers me that people believe they are left in the dust with the Droid Eris, or Hero.
Maybe I'm just a satisfied customer and enjoy having the world in my hand when I hold my Eris, but there are too many unsatisfied, give me give me babies out there that can't stop complaining that they don't have turn-by-turn navigation.
And almost every other post on this forum is about the Eris/Hero 2.1 Update. And most of the replies to these posts are adults who sound like little infants wanting more milk from their mother (Verizon being the mother).
Last thought. The amount of time people spend complaining about no update and no turn-by-turn navigation on their Eris, they could've worked and saved up enough money to buy the Incredible for full retail. So stop complaining and go work so you can buy the newest phone that will complete your life.

All I'm reading here is "I call people who use common sense in real life snarky, and M3lton is a good example of something I'm not -- sensible."
Just sayin'.
