Fox Fi / PDA Net+ and Verizon Jellybean

OK, I am supposed to be able to use third party tools to tether and have been since the FCC ruling.

Verizon upgraded my phone and now when I try to run Fox Fi / PDA Net + it tries to activate a "feature" on my Verizon account when it's not required or necessary and then it fails and tells me to call customer service.

I emailed customer service and they told me "they don't support third party software and that the software obviously does not work with jellybean but for $30 a month they could enable and support tethering".

The issue here is that Verizon is actively blocking the tethering software and hoping that the FCC isn't watching and the fine will be minimal for breaking the law while they feign ignorance as to why all of the sudden these software products all quit working.

I will be reporting Verizon to the FCC for this violation as we all should.

I would like to know how to downgrade my phone so that my software continues to work.

Can Verizon do it at the store?

Thanks in advance for any help and / or suggestions.

If you have the unlimited data plan, you need to add the hotspot feature to your account. Then you can use the standard hotspot app or FoxFi or PDA Net.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

You need to go ask this question in some other place which can answer you question or shut up and pay for the VZW service and stop trying to steel from VZW.  This is only included on the limited data not the unlimited data.  You better hurry though as you are only going to have unlimited data for a limited time.

Verizon has not announced any plan to discontinue unlimited data.  Speculation is they will end it July 2014 when the last of the new contracts expire, but this is just speculation.

japetty....obviously you didn't know that it's legal for me to use a tethering app....

I have not rooted my phone I was simply using a feature that I already pay for.

BTW, I think you meant to use the word "steal" instead of "steel"......

Have a great day

The FCC ruling says Verizon must allow access to free tethering apps with their metered data plans.  They can AND DO charge for tethering with their unlimited data plan.  You can purchase 2GB for $20 or unlimited for $30.  This is in addition to the data plan itself.

Well they don't. I do not have unlimited data. I have a 4GB plan which I assume is "metered". Told only free with SHARED plan. Again - if someone from Verizon reads this and i was informed incorrectly, then let me know.

If i go to activate the Mobile Hotspot, it gives me a message to contact Verizon. I did, and that is what they told me - only free with shared plan. So my paid for 4GB can't be used the way I choose to use it. Have sent correspondence to FCC for clarification on this as I was under the impression that only unlimited data plans had to pay the extra.

If you have a metered data plan, they don't give you free tethering.  That's not what I said.  However, you can download a 3rd party app and use it for free.  That is what the FCC ruling says.  If you are on the Share Everything plan, you get free tethering/hotspot with the Verizon hotspot feature.  If you have unlimited data, you must pay for tethering/hotspot.

What Jim said. If you're on a 4gig plan then you can tether for no additional charge WITH a 3rd party app. The ruling said they had to allow this, but didn't say they also had to provide their own app for it. Just download a different hotspot app instead of trying to use theirs.

AZSALUKI:

PDANet+ is a 3rd party app for this and worked fine until this update.

VZ Tech Support took the "3rd Party" app response as well and said we agreed to them updating the phone when we signed the contract.

Ok, I have spoken to VZ Tech Support and Motorola. Here is the response from Motorola.

REMOVED due to VZ wanting to censor it.
