Any idea how long the first battery charge takes for the Eris? I am so ready to get started, but after 5 hours it's still charging.

Are you charging from the wall charger or from a PC's USB port? If you have it hooked up to a PC, the output current of a PC's USB port can, in some instances, be quite low and can take 2-3 times as long as plugging it into the wall charger.
I should show fully charged after 5 hours if you are using the included wall charger. It really shouldn't take more than about 2 1/2 hours roughly, from completely dead, unless you have been using it during that time, in which case it could take longer.
Is the phone getting quite warm to the touch? This could indicate over-charging. (If you haven't been using it? Again, if you have WiFi on and in use, the WiFi tends to generate quite a lot of heat, and it might be warm to the touch.)

Thanks for your answer, it is appreciated.
I was using the wall charger. After doing some research online, it seems that other people have had this problem. Once I unplugged it and plugged it back in it showed fully charged. I hope this isn't going to happen everytime I charge it. At least I will have it turned on for future charges and will be able to see the battery level. This was the first charge so the phone was off.
Phone was not getting warm.

At least if the battery wasn't getting warm, the phone knew enough to actually taper the charge off, so no battery damage occurs
Since it's new, and you haven't done anything with it yet, I might suggest (I know *I* would do it in your case) doing a full factory reset of the phone -
