You still can't upgrade your phone using the two year contract pricing if you had the unlimited data plan on that line. When they increased the data plan price, they added the option to purchase a new phone under the Device Payment option which is full retail price across 24 months. Those customers are still restricted to purchasing at full retail price, but now there are two ways they can do through VZW. One, retail price outright or the installment payment plan. In some ways it actually restored a purchase option for those customers. There used to be a 12 month installment payment option with a $2 monthly finance charge that unlimited data plan customers could use and keep their unlimited data plan. That option was removed when VZW introduced the "Edge program" with 24 months of installment payments and no finance charges. The price increase added the current Device Payment option (formerly known as Edge) to those customer's choices for purchasing devices.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

The statement by Thomas that you couldn't get a new phone and keep unlimited data was not accurate. You just had to purchase the new phone at full retail cost. Some people consider being able to get a DISCOUNTED phone the only way to purchase a phone. There are other ways. You have always been able to keep unlimited data by purchasing a new phone at full retail cost. This has not changed.

What has recently changed is that you can now purchase a phone at full retail with payments spread out equally over 24 months without finance charges and keep unlimited data.

For what it is worth, Verizon NEVER gave away unlimited data plans. There was always a charge. Of course 10 years ago you could only use a FRACTION of the data that you can now because the speeds of data transmission have increased tenfold, soon to be increased even more when 5G is introduced. THAT is why Verizon states it is unsustainable, the technology changed and continues to do so. At the time many people, myself included, thought unlimited data was overpriced. For some usage habits it WAS overpriced but it was the only game in town, you either had unlimited data or you didn't have a smartphone. For others who used a large amount of data, it wasn't overpriced Shared data was introduced to alleviate those complaints. Around the same time, 4G data speeds were introduced and THAT is why unlimited data was discontinued as a currently available option. If you had it, you could keep it but you couldn't add it any longer. At the time, I had stated it is possible Verizon at some point would bring back unlimited data, but at a MUCH increased price(I think I stated $100 at the time). Verizon has since increased the price for existing unlimited data customers to $50 from $30 but has not yet brought it back for new additions. Maybe when the price increases yet again it will happen. Afterall, I pay more than $50/month for my unlimited broadband data at a FIXED location for my home. I don't find it unreasonable to think that a MOBILE unlimited data connection should cost LESS than that.

Lastly, I use MORE data now with shared data and 4 smartphone lines than I did with unlimited data on 2 smartphone lines and 2 basic phone lines and pay LESS now than I did previously. That certainly doesn't equate to Verizon "giving away" unlimited data. The price was high unless you had need for a large amount of data.

What I meant with this statement is that I think a MOBILE unlimited data connection would be MORE expensive than the stationary landline unlimited data connection, i.e MORE than $50/month.

After reading my original statement again, I think it sounds as if I am saying the opposite.

No, you said it right - you said $50 for an unlimited mobile data connection is not unreasonable, and that you would expect it to be more than your landline/stationary unlimited data connection.  It's not more, it less.  And as I said, puts the $50 a month in perspective.

And technically, my Comcast "unlimited" cable connection does have a cap, something like 250 GB, which we don't get close to, but there IS a cap.

Always reminds me of this:

“I’ve been pretty public saying the unlimited model does not work in an LTE environment,” Shammo said. “Unlimited is a very short-term game in the LTE market. Eventually unlimited is going to go away because you have to generate cash to reinvest.”

This is a little strange because all of Verizon’s major rivals offer unlimited data plans in some form and they don’t seem to have problems finding enough cash to invest in network upgrades. As I’ve noted in the past, data caps like the ones Verizon uses are a crock that aren’t necessary for proper network management and that only serve to boost carriers’ wireless margins.

And of course, as DSLReports points out, Verizon has been happy to exempt its own video streaming service Go90 from its own data caps, which means that the carrier doesn’t mind when users watch a lot of video on its network as long as they’re doing so through Verizon’s own application.

I'm loving the input here from most of you, my frustration is that I'm a truck driver by trade and I'm on the road 3 months at a time. I use data to find fuel stations,  places to eat , walmart to get groceries,  just to name a few, so when verizon gave out unlimited data when they grandfathered folks in 10 years ago and say they can't give it out now seems a little odd.. I don't care if I get 3g unlimited as long as I can meet the needs of customers and shippers alike . I don't even mind paying more for it but I have 20gb  now verizon wants to charge 15$ per gb over seems obsurd. I would just like them to meet me half way without killing me financially.

Manufacturers stopped offering 3G devices. On top of that regulation stops Verizon forcing throttling to lower standards with the purchase of the 700mhz spectrum. I bet if Verizon could do what the other carriers can do they'd probably still be offering unlimited. Now keep in mind when the new low band spectrum comes out I am willing to be the other carriers will stop offering unlimited as well or T-mobile current offerings will change drastically due to these rules.

again it was offered and now its not and will not b offered anymore as we know for now so why you asking something doesn't offered anymore . Either you are just trying to make this tread big or just trying to prove something which had been discussed already many time so again it be no ....now you can go to carrier who give you unlimited and coverage is less and throttle speed after you reached cap then I am sure you be complaining you paid more for gas cause data didn't work or cant find walmart as gps don't work as coverage issue....you can get new phone from new carrier and test drive a month on the road and see what happened give us feedback then ask same question

nothing personal but sometime fighting or arguing for something which not going to happen will just make you mad/upset and waste of time to fight for it....

Not to be disrespectful, but you could find tens of thousands of fuel stations, places to eat, walmarts, etc... in a month and not even come close to HALF of a 20 GB data allowance, not to mention using any of those $15/GB overages you mention.

It is not the "few" things you mentioned which is eating your allowance. It is the "few" that you didn't mention that is eating it. My guess would be streaming activities, whether it is music or video...
