DROID Eris Touch Screen HUGE Malfunction!

My Eris is completely {word filter avoidance} up. The screen freezes ALL the time and not only that but it drags the screen to the left by itself. In texting it always pulls the cursor towards the left of the type box, and on the main screen it drags the screen to the left, then when its all the way to the left it freezes, and when it doesn't freeze it won't let me pull it back right. I'm REALLY getting ticked off about this crap, does ANYONE have any suggestions?

I'm having the exact same issue and this is my second Eris! I had the same problem with my first one. Have you been able to get it resolved?

-First I'd say remove the battery and leave it out for about 10 seconds. Put the battery back in.

-If not, do a factory reset. See if that works.

-If you're using a screen protector, take that off and see if it changes.

-If you have too many text messages, or taking up too much internal space, that may be the reason why. Delete your threads and clear your cache from your applications. Here's where you'll find them:

For Messaging:

Click Messaging

Hit Menu

Hit Delete Threads

Clearing Cache and Data for Applications

On the Home Screen, hit Menu.

Hit Settings

Hit Applications

Hit Manage Applications

Choose which application you want to clear the cache with, such as Market.

Hit Clear Cache

Hit Clear Data

-If not, it may be an application that's causing the malfunction. Try to remove a few apps to troubleshoot it yourself.

For weekly and monthly maintenance, I also do what supitsmike suggested. As least weekly I am clearing the cache on my apps. Monthly I decide to remove any unused apps. Recently I just backed up all my sms messages and then deleted most of my message threads. I did do a factory reset about a week after the 2.1 OTA update and have had do one since. With all this maintenance that I do, I have not had to do a battery pull for the phone freezing for a long time.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Sorry! Fat fingers. Clarification, I have not had to do a factory reset since the first one after the 2.1 OTA update.

Obviously there is a real issue with the touch screen /software /cursor or whatever regarding the Eris. I’m on my 5th Eris and I am so angry that Verizon keeps giving me refurbished garbage to replace a device I purchased less than a year ago. Shouldn’t we be entitled to a new device right off their shelf? I’m so tired of being inconvenienced and jerked around by Verizon and their service/ devices, my time is continuously wasted listing to technicians and customer service reps spew caned responses to my problems, and I’m tired!

I just want a device that works as advertised –

Something needs to be done about the way corporations are allowed to conduct business in this country. I constantly feel like I’m not getting what I pay for anymore, whether it be a service or a product. We are being robbed, and its legal.

This is a known issue on the Eris, the charger port comes loose and affects the trackball. They may not admit it, but it's known. Your best bet is to take it into a store so a tech can see what's happening. If they have refurbs in stock, that's what you'll get, nothing new as the Eris isn't being sold anymore.

I am having the exact same problem! I do not want to have to do problem fixing every time I want to use the phone. When it is working properly, I love it. But when I need to make a call or reply quickly to my boss and it is texting backwards or just frozen-it just is not good at all. And if all Verizon is going to do is give me the exact same phone that will end up doing the same thing-how does that help the problem?!?

I hate the fact that there hasn't been a recall on the phone and I will be stuck with it for another year...UGHHH!

I too have been having this problem off and on for quite some time. I have not found a solution, but I have discovered that the phone routinely uses 100% of the cpu cycles and that corresponds with the screen freezing and moving to the left. I have not been successful in finding out what apps are contributing to the cpu usage. I use a process monitor to see what apps are running and it also tells me what percentage of cpu cycles are being utilized. I have tried stopping the apps 1 by 1 with no luck. Another cpu usage app tells me that  "HTC Checkin Service/Sync" is using the majority of the cpu cycles. Maybe this info will help someone in here to figure out what is going on.
