Considering a Droid Eris within the next week or two.

Hey all, I am hoping to get enough advice from everyone here to help me end the agonizing choice between a Droid Eris and LG env Touch. I realize that this is like comparing apples to oranges but bare with me.  I have very limited needs out of a phone and hate spending more money then I need to. Both phones will essentially cost me the same for the phone (thank you NE2).  I'd like a phone for a small amount of voice min (450), small text plan (everyone I talk to regularly is in the verizon net work, so the 250 plan works for me) and I'd like to be able to use the web to check various news sites, weather sites, info sites etc.  I'd like a decent camera and video recorder and I kinda like the access to Youtube. Games aren't a priority but certianly don't hurt and I'm also into reading digital books.  I'm also not big on the social networking thing. The plan for the LG Touch would cost me roughly about 65 bucks after taxs and discounts but  I'm having touble determining how much the Eris plan would cost me (and what it is I am exactly getting for that cost) As best I can tell, I'd be paying 79.99 for the data plan (or is it 39.99 for 450 min + 29.99 for data package? and I'd also add a small text plan.  I think after taxes and discounts I can get it for around 85 or so. So for a 20-25 dollar difference is it worth it? What am I getting for that money? What impacts would the Eris plan have on potentially adding a connect or premium plan voice plan later on, would discount be available or would it be full price for both.

My apologies for the rambling email but I've been going back and forth between the two phones for about a week and half and just really want the right phone for me.

A couple of things...

I like the Eris just fine. Sounds like you need to decide if you want to pay the extra money for the data plan that will be required with the Eris. Don't know about the LG phone.

And based on what I just read a minute ago,  if not being able to initiate voice dialing via pressing the "talk" button on the Bluetooth headset leaves your life in shambles, stay away from Android phones altogether.

As I said, I LOVE my Eris.

I have the Eris and my fiance is deciding between the enV Touch or the Eris. Now when checking the upgrade options last night online, Verizon has 2 data plans for the enV Touch: $10/month for 25mb, $20 for 75mb. The $30 data plan for the Eris has unlimited and up to 10 email accounts. If you end up doing a lot of web surfing that can eat up MBs of data, especially if you're looking at videos and such.

Now we have 4 phones, the 1400 min voice plan, each phone has the 250 text plan plus the data for my Eris. So I'm paying close to $200/month.

Both will cover your voice plan.  Texting keep in mind that the 250messaging plan doesn't include mobile to mobile so what network the people you talk to are on is irrelevant to that concern.  The Env Touch is supposed to have some games but it will come through the verizon site so expect to pay for them every month.  Or most of them.  You won't be able to read books on it.  I don't know about Youtube.  The ERIS has youtube built in, free games and games that you pay for once, It will also be able to do more advanced games, web experience will be vastly superior on the ERIS for many reasons, and the ereader well none of the big names are on Android yet but Shortcovers is a fairly comprehensive store and Barnes and Noble is supposed to be working on an app for Android.  Kindle hasn't mentioned it yet but just released one for PC and has had one for iPhone/iPod touch.  They say Blackberry and Mac are next so I am not holding my breath on an Android app for it for a while yet.  The Eris will require more data but will also allow you to use a lot more data.  25mb was barely sufficient for checking my bank and twitter and a few other things on my feature phone I would go with 75mb and even then you will need to keep an eye on it if you use web or other things like that a lot.

Thanks Fezzik and everyone else who responded. I made my choice today when I was reviewing the plans. I was thinking I needed the Nationwide plan for smartphones. I didn't realize that I was looking over the wrong wireless plan. With the Basic plan and the small text messaging service, data package and insurance I'm at about 80 a month prior to taxes, probably about 9ish after taxes and then I get a discount from my company bringing me back down to the mid 70's or so, only 10 or 15 bucks more then I'm at now. This is managable for a phone I think I'm going to use alot. Gonna be ordering it online tommrow. Am I better off waiting to get it and then turning it on at my local store or should I just get the plan on line?

So the Eris can be used with the 9.95 data plan?

No and the 9.95 data plan would end up costing you a fortune.  My wife has a blackberry and doesn't use data services very much and she has already used more data than the 15 dollar plan would cover and our plan started on the 22nd.  There are a lot of data services going on in these phones as with any Linux system the network is the backbone with out it it is useable but not to anything remotely coming close to anywhere near its full potential.  To put it simply I have used over half a gig of data in just about 2 weeks without really trying.  75mb isn't going to touch it.  My wife who doesn't surf the web and whose phone doesn't rely so heavily on data services has used 200 mb.  Believe me when I say you really don't want a smart phone with out a smartphone data plan.  You may think you do but if they allowed it you would be screaming about how they bent you over charging you for all the overage charges on your data.
