I changed my mobile number a month or so ago and was in for a shock when I saw my next bill, which mysteriously had about $100 added to it. It turns out that after I changed my phone number, Verizon was charging me for BOTH my old number AND my new number. I called customer service and they told me I have to pay the full amount anyway and only THEN will I receive a credit. Well, I don't have the money to pay $200 for service I didn't even use.
Now my account is in collections and I can't get someone on the phone. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. Has this happened to anyone else??

Changing a number doesn't add a new line. Check the bill carefully to see if you see two different dates for those numbers. The old one should be between day one of your cycle to the time it changed. The new one should have the date of being changed to the end of your cycle.
