Can you turn off MTP and use USB when connecting to a laptop?

I would much rather use the USB interface for file sharing and transfer, but I don't seem to be able to turn off MTP on the phone.  I like my new HTC One M8, but using HTC's software is not my favorite thing to do...

The MTP connection is a Google decision not HTC. All the Android devices release with Android 4.0 and higher have used the MTP connection protocol for transferring files between the computer and the device.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
