Sorry to hear about your cell phone, kameronmariehayes. nicholasbranson is correct regarding SMS and iMessages. There is another way to access your text messages online but it requires that you preinstall an application beforehand. If you log in to your My Verizon, you may be able to view them by hovering your mouse on the tab called My Device, at the very top of the screen. From there, just click on the tab to View and Sent Text Messages. If you have used Verizon Messages on that phone, you should be able to view your texts on line.
Once you have your smartphone back, I recommend installing Verizon Messages on both the phone, and your tablet. It will ask you to sync a special pin via your tablet. This will allow you to view and send texts from your tablet as it is linked to your phone number.

An ipad will pull in only iMessages, not those sent as SMS, so at best, only texts from people with iphones. In order to do so, you have to log in to imessage by going to settings>messages>log in and turn on imessage.

Did you have Verizon Messages installed on your device? If it was, you should be able to install Verizon Messages on your iPad and view your SMS/MMS messages.
It has been awhile since I installed Verizon Messages on my iPad, so I am unsure if a code was sent to my phone to confirm that I was the person installing Verizon Messages.
If you had Verizon Messages installed on your android, you should also be able to log into your MyVerizon account and view your messages there.
