Accessing Highway Traffic Info

Warning! This is a stupid newbie question! My smart phone (Motorola Droid 3) is much smarter than I am!

I recently downloaded an app from our state Dept. of Transportation that gives road conditions, alerts, etc. But I can't figure out how to get the data to load when I'm "on the road" (meaning away from home, NOT driving). The app displays "loading..." for all types of information, but never actually loads it. Turning on wireless makes no difference. Is there another setting I should use? Is this a matter of not having a certain feature on my account?

Additional information: This feature works from my home and from my work place, but I couldn't get it to load at my nephew's house even though I was connected to his wifi network. I'd like to be able to use it from a restaurant, shopping mall, etc.

Thanks for your patience with my ignorance!

Well, I cornered someone who is actually smarter than his cell phone and he figured out that I had the 3G turned off. Duh-oh! Works like a champ now.

From what you describe, you may not have the location services (GPS) turned on so the phone doesn't know where you are.  I'm not familiar with your phone, but there probably is a setting for location and security.  This is where you turn on the GPS service/s.

You mention wireless not making a difference.  When you are on the road, you are probably not close enough to a wireless hotspot to use wireless.

Thanks for your reply. VZW location services was turned on, but not standalone GPS services. I turned it on, made sure wireless was turned off (so it would work like when I was away from wifi), then restarted the phone. Still getting the "loading..." message from the traffic app. No joy so far, but it was a good suggestion.

Dude! Please change your email preferences for the VZW community!

You are posting this in several forum discussions.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

There may be a problem with the app.  Try uninstalling and reinstalling it.  If that doesn't work, there are several apps out there that give traffic information.  Or, call VZW Customer Service and see if they can help.  I would suggest you use the stand alone GPS service because you have to pay for the VZW location services.

I think you may be confusing Verizon Location Service with Vzw Navigator; as far as I know, there is no charge for Location Service, but there is a charge for Navigator
