A solution to texting and driving.

I'm no developer.............BUT I have an idea.

Why cant someone come up with an app that uses the phones GPS to see if the user is moving more than say 10 miles per hour and disable texting until you reach a slower speed?

Sounds like a brilliant app, but it appears to be only for Sprint phones. Hopefully they'll develop ones for other carriers too. What a great idea!

Wow, they have it for sprint. Well, verizon should have it as standard issue and un-installable like some other cra.....um....apps they have that you cant remove. Complaints up the waazoo at first, but when it starts savin lives the complaints wills stop. As a motorcycle rider myself I have to keep a close eye on traffic as it is. Nowa days I have to try and check and see if the driver is texting or watching the road on top of trying to bee seen on 2 wheels. I'd be greatfull if this app was standard issue on all phones and all services.

This feature needs to be embedded into the phone.  I would love to see text message capability inhibited for receiving and sending messages over a certain speed (any speed a few mph faster than the average runner's speed).  If no texts are received then there is no temptation to send a reply either.  For people riding in the car, there should be a way to enable texting capabilities but it would have to be done in a way that a person driving the could not do while they are driving.  I care about this because my daughter will be driving in just over 14 years.  That's right, she's not even 2.  I say this because I don't believe cell phone companies will do anything by then to stop texting and driving.  It needs to be done with the phone directly and not by signing a stupid pledge online or seeing a TV commercial trying to scare people from texting and driving.  Making texting and driving illegal isn't stopping people from being killed.

I bet in 14 years all communications with a cell phone will be through the vehicles communication system. The minute you get behind the drivers seat the car senses the phone in your pocket, and the vehicle takes over control of the phone. If you receive a text the vheicle will tell you from whom its from and ask if you want it displayed of the heads up display on the windshield. You can deline or accept.  If you want to respond to it you do so by voice command,  all without your eyes leaving the road.

YES this would still illegal under present laws, but it would be a lot safer. You will never get texting and driving out of the car unless the carriers do away with it altogether.  The only thing left is to make the process less dangerous as people will always be using their phones when driving no matter what the penalty will be.
