1 message still showing up but no new messages Droid Eris

I have no unread messages but there is still one showing up on the mail icon and wondering how I can clear this?? I tried clearing cache, looking thru folders and nothing. any ideas??

I occasionally get the number to hang up on the icon too. I usually just delete the icon and then add it back. I would open the all applications list, scroll to the application, long press until it switches to the home screen and drag the icon to where you had original one.
