my droid keeps turning on apps by itself, anywhere from 4 to 12 different apps  like e-mail, weather, browser, etc., are turning on by themselves and draining battery life.  this started with the last upgrade (hah).  fix it or lose me.  I don't appreciate the adds scrolling across the screen (since first upgrade) either

Any takers?????     I will say ads on apps were there before 2.2. Froyo does not control what the deveolpers place on their apps.

Ads have been on most of the free apps in the market from day one.  What Froyo has done when you upgrade your apps is make it easier for the app creater to push banner ads because of the new Flash plug in that Froyo provides.  You can't have your cake and eat it to. You want Flash so you can visit almost every web site?  Then don't complain when the app creaters use that technology to push ads.

yeah....if you don't want to see ads, then simply uninstall or don't use that app. vzn has NOTHING to do with this. you want free apps? then deal with the ads. some apps are available "ad free" if you are willing to buy the app. the developers have to make money one way or the other. either from you, or from selling ads on their app.

The reason why your apps load by themselves is because they have to access data from the internet.  When you install an app you will see a list of things the app will do.  Some need to access the GPS for location based services and others have to access the internet for other data.  If don't already, download advanced task killer from the market and uncheck any apps that you want running all the time.  Once installed you can stop running those aps and increase your battery life.

Sincerely,

this is simply not true!

task killer stops them for...oh...1 minute and then they open by themselves. And...if insult to injury isn't enough, google runs ads on the bottom of your phone....

forget the enslavement and rid yourself of these corporations...

The phone is meant to run the way you describe.

As for ads, they are placed by developers. They need to make money somehow.
