I have run into this very same wall. What earlten describes is absolutely just as true today in 2014 as it was in 2010 when this post was first made and it is still absolute bovine feces. It affects not only my Android phone running AndChat but also my Pantech UML295W wireless Aircard. Now I have to start looking into proxy servers as a workaround. Very not happy.
