5G Coverage Map Lied!

The 5G coverage map posted on the VZW site shows 5G is Live in certain areas around Charlotte, NC. Well I took a drive and a stroll today to center city at the Bank of America stadium and guess what? NO 5G UltraWide Band icon popped up on my phone. I thought my phone was broken. I rebooted my phone, switched to airplane mode, reset network settings and finally factory reset it and set it up as new and still only had 4GLTE. I then hopped in my car and drove down to South Park mall as the map claimed that 5G was active there and guess what? NO 5GUWB icon showed up there either. So I stopped by a corporate VZW store on Fairview Road and swapped my sim card just in case of an issue there. Still NO 5G. The nice young lady in the store proceeded to tell me that 5G isn't fully live in Charlotte. That it has only been live for football games and then shut off. She even pointed out the 5G antenna in her store that is completely dead. I ran multiple speedtest at all locations thinking maybe the icon on my phone was broken and i could only get between 40 and 60 Mbps upload and download speeds. Verizon please update your 5G coverage map to show 5G is not working yet in Charlotte, NC. Also please stop getting people excited about something you don't even have working yet! I had the exact experience with 4GLTE 10 years ago. They tell me they have launched it in my area and then it never worked until a year later.

Drove around in Chicago with a Galaxy S20+ around Millennium Park and Art Institute and other areas on Columbus Dr where the 5G coverage map shows full saturation... network symbol never once budged from 4G LTE. Although at a couple of spots, I did see download speed of 251 Mbps and upload 54 Mbps... network icon still stayed on 4G LTE. Everywhere else... 40 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up on 4G LTE.

Contacted customer service over chat and got a generic response that coverage depends on many things... makes you wonder whether this will ever work.

I wouldn't count on 5G working for another year or two.  I live 30 mins from the center of the technology world (headquarters for Apple, Facebook, and Google) and 5G is pretty much non existent around here.  If you go to a specific corner/intersection and there's no building/tree in your path, you might get 5g... but only in that one spot....lol

I think 5G is just a Verizon marketing ploy... in reality it probably won't be able to be used for one or two years form now...

Just how does Verizon get away with advertising that they have 5G coverage when in fact it's almost "nowhere"!!!  This is like a car company saying their car will get 50 mpg, but once you buy and drive the car,  you find out it's only getting 15 mpg!!!

One would think that some regulatory agency would crack down on Verizon lying to their customers.  The reality is, 5G is almost nowhere... so, why even consider buying a 5G phone???  It's a waste of money!!!

One would think Verizon would be "honest" with their customers!!!

As I found out the hard way..

5g rollout is device specific.  I have 5g all around me. Problem is, my device won't be "enabled" for 5g until Nov 20th timeframe. Seems they are prioritizing iPhone 12 and other new launches.

Not sure why the adhoc/messed up roll-out. But, if I don't have 5g by Nov 25th, I will be demanding my money back.

it would be fantastic if someone from VZ that is knowledgeable could straighten this issue out as we can't be the only ones that have received misleading information.

Can someone explain what the bid deal is about 5G?  Don't have a phone with but why do I want it?   Mary

Thanks for your info.  But around where I am (30 mins from the heart of Silicon Valley) the Verizon Coverage Map only shows one intersection in the San Jose, Ca area that has 5G coverage! And if you're not close to that intersection, you don't get 5G.

The only other place I see Verizon 5G is on TV commercials!!! What a joke! Once again, I don't know how Verizon gets away with advertising that they have 5G, when in fact they don't have 5G in most places..

After being with Verizon for many years, I'm considering switching to T-Mobile. I believe their 5G coverage is much more available. And I've been told they have 3 bands for 5G since they've merged with Sprint... high, mid and low bands.

Even if T-Mobile's 5G is somewhat slower, it's better than no 5G at all. - Otherwise what's the sense in spending top dollar for the latest 5G phones?

Acraftylady2-

If you have a good 4g phone, I'd recommend sticking with it and waiting a year or two until 5G is actually out and available.

The reason people are considering 5g, which means 5th generation, is because it is about 10 times faster than 4G service.  This becomes an issue only when you are downloading things or using the internet... using data.

When you are on 5g, there is no issue about your speed getting throttled downwards during busy times because apparently it is not an issue using 5G.

As mentioned in other posts, 5G is only available in select places... very few! iI's not worth spending lots of money to get a 5G phone when you can't get 5G service. If one is lucky enough to live in a 5G City such as Atlanta, I suppose then it might be worth it. Otherwise, it isn't... At least not with Verizon.

If someone bought a 5G phone for Verizon thinking they were going to get that service, and like me found out they can't get 5G service, it might be worth considering T-Mobile since they seem to have more 5G coverage.

I hope this explanation helps.

Thanks, I just got my note 10 plus over the summer so hopefully a few years before I have to replace it.  I am mostly connected to wifi all the time and don't have to work from my phone outside of wifi so probably doesn't matter to me, was curious.

Holy moly!  I'm in NW IN with 4G LTE service and if I got the 4G speeds you're seeing, I'd be ecstatic!  I'm getting 5.6 download and 1.8 up on my phone and 4.8 down and 2.7 up on my hotspot.  And signal loss on both every few minutes, which began a couple months ago.  Wish I could get the service you have.
