I just upgraded to the Razr this afternoon. The rep was having trouble with registering me and finally said the 4G service was temporarily down. "It should be up in an hour or so".  I am still using my old phone and no real answer as to when I can even get my new device working. Now I read that this is the third outage this month and Verizon has yet to say their cause.

Seriously JGouse, I'm sure Verizon is well aware that if they don't get these problems ironed out it will hurt their market share over time. I can pretty much guarantee you that they are working as hard as they can to fix it. Going without 4g for a night is a an annoyance, not a real problem.

Looks like I finally got my 4G back up here in Phoenix.  What bothers me is that I need my data connection to my phone for work and this is the third time this month that it has gone down (thankfully during times I wasn't working, but who knows when it will go down next time).

I would just like to know if this is being caused by new activations or is this a technical problem that just keeps popping up?  I have always loved Verizon's service and coverage and would hate to see continued outages sully my confidence in them.

As I've already stated - for a lot of us this isn't a "4G" problem. A lot of us are without any service to include basic phone. Thankfully my work provides me another phone which I can use during this issue but others don't have this luxury.

The sales rep did tell me the system was running 'a little slow' today but never mentioned a bulletin stating the system was completely down until further notice. In my situation it wouldn't have mattered since my phone was toast anyway.

It is a mere annoyance to me at this point but I still expect some sort of apology or acknowledgement of the problem. My calls to tech support and customer service have been pathetic - it wasn't until this board I found relevant information regarding this obvious problem. (Granted it is very public now)

So, for now I'm unsubscribing from this thread in hopes tomorrow will be a better day.

I just moved from Sprint to Verizon / Nexus 12/22, just in time for these outages.

Occasional problems might be ok, but they HAVE TO BE UPFRONT about it, how about texting the affected areas ?

Or announcing it themselves on twitter.

Beats hearing about it on twitter from others.

My 4G cut out around 10:30am, and the Nexus refuses to tether in 3G mode apparantly.

Left Sprint because of their change to data cap, and never getting 4G in San Diego.

IMHO your company made a poor business choice. I personally wouldn't switch to an unproven network regardless of how shiny it looks.
This is what generally happens when a new network goes up quickly. I have done this kind of stuff the to USN for many years. We never deploy a network until after it has proven itself. We always have the old network up at the same time and run them at the same time for a few years before transitioning. The switch over is what is really causing problems. AT&T had the same trouble when they deployed their 3G. Their old data network is GSM and their 3G data network is CDMA. Verizon is doing it in reverse.

I just glanced at the last ten pages of this thread and 99% of these posts are from people that registered recently, if not today, and this is their first post. This is in the "news", online, tv and written press. Registering just to post that 4G is out in yet another area is like posting that the moon is yellow and round. There is an outage. We get it. Verizon definitely gets it. Otherwise, welcome to the forum.

@Ceedub

Unfortunately, this isn't a matter of "going without 4G for a night".  Hey, networks have interruptions on rare occasions.

But this isn't rare.  This is the third time in a month, and it's not just for a few minutes or an hour or two.  The current state of Verizon's 4G network issues has made it so that I cannot rely on it being available when I need it to be.  I can't be confident that, if I go into Airplane Mode for a visit to a doctor's office, it will turn back on when I'm done.  Several times, I've had to "jumpstart" my data connection.

How can I have confidence that it won't suddenly fail on me in the middle of a financial transaction (banking, online ordering, etc.)?

Y'know what?  I should be able to expect that confidence because Verizon is supposed to be"America's most reliable network".

I work in Downtown Los Angeles and most of the day since the morning, no 4GLTE.  To get 3G on my phone, I had to manually switch the phone to CDMA Only.  When I got home to Burbank an hour ago, I tried setting it back to 4G, and this time, it stays in 3G mode.

Still no service in Missouri 2pm until NOW so far... While frustrating - I am sure they are doing what they can, however, 3 times in a little over a month is not a small problem.

Our company just moved to Verizon and this is really hampering productivity since we all work on the road or from home.  We don't have back up phones because we moved from a different provider.  We were told we would need to move to a 3G phone and additive costs would be involved...

Coverage is great when it is up and running... far better than our previous carrier.

Can anyone explain the technical reason for the inability to activate a new 4G phone while the 4G network is down?

I get it that the VZW 4G network is experiencing a widespread outtage, but why does this preclude activation of a new phone when there is no problem with the 3G network?

Certainly lots of people buy 4G phones that do not yet have 4G coverage in their market.

I have already spoken to a VZW tier 2 rep, and they explained that the 4G activation system is tied to the 4G network even if someone is activating over 3G. Okay, got it.

But why is this the case?

Is there some alternate way to activate a 4G phone over the net?
