I received a strange phone call today from an individual claiming to be with Verizon's Reward Program. He stated that as of September 30th I had been given status as a Verizon preferred customer, or something like that, and that I was eligible for a $50 discount off of my next bill. He wanted me to confirm some personal information, but I quickly became suspicious as I had never heard of this before. I asked if I could call back in a bit to complete the conversation as I was very busy at the moment and then he stated that because he is with a 3rd party that handles this for Verizon, there is no way to call back, but that he would try again later in the day.
Has anyone ever heard of this, or is it a scam? I don't like handing out information to anyone unless I am positive they are legit. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to get a credit on my bill as I have been with Verizon for over ten years, but this just seems too odd. Especially considering the number that called me had too many digits (86282452253).

That sounds super fishy. I had similar things happen to me in the past from time to time. I wouldn't give out any information if I were you.

Oh wow MascotRay! Dragnfly18 was right - that does sound fishy. I'm glad you got suspicious because that call certainly didn't come from anyone authorized by Verizon Wireless. We've been made aware of these types of phishing scams, but usually phishing http://bit.ly/HnsTP8 is in an email form. Protecting customer privacy is a top priority at Verizon Wireless and we definitely appreciate you for being proactive in sharing what happened with you.
Keep your information safe. If you're ever in doubt, reach out to us before you give out your information to someone fishy.
Thank you

My son just received a call on his phone from a computerized voice saying we have a $125 rewards credit to use by next month and to register on a my rewards 123 website. Out of curiosity, I went to find the website but couldn't find it. When I called the number back (1/2hr later) I was told the number is no longer in service, but it didn't sound like the normal operator voice. 800-922-2222

I just received the same call telling me to go to www.vz.com for a $75.00 rebate.
The number calling was 1-800-000-0000

My phone showed an incoming call with too many digits to be a real phone number. It was 86282452253. After researching it online, I've found a dizzying number of people have been harassed by this caller, sometimes as much as every 5 minutes. Can't Verizon make sure this doesn't happen to it's customers?

How do you propose verizon ensures it doesn't happen? Many numbers are spoofed which isn't instantly detectable by verizon's systems and they use hundreds/thousands of different numbers that are constantly changing as well so the only way to fully prevent it would be to block every possible number.

I just got two texts telling me of a $50 reward and to go to www.verizonrewards.net. It looks very official and like a Verizon site, but I will assume it is part of this same scam. Kindof scary.

Thanks for the warning. I just received one of those calls at 7:30am today from a number listed as "unknown" on my call log. Claimed I had $35 worth opt credit on my next bill by going to the website identified on the automated message. I was on the road, so had no way of recording the info. But now I'll let this phishing scam go no further.
