I know it's been a month or so but in case you haven't resolved this yet I thought I might tell you what I do. I'm not sure we have the same problem but I also have a phone that isn't smart and a son (along with most of the rest of my world) that has a "smart" phone so I have the photo viewing problem as well. The work around I use is to simply forward any text messages with photos or multi media messages to my email address. You can enter it instead of a phone number in the line for that (where to send the text). So just go to "options" and forward the message...in the space for who put your email address and it will send it to your email where you will be able to see the photo just as you do any other in your email on your computer.
