NSA collecting phone records for millions of Verizon customers, report says
Another case of Big Brother and Big Government trampling on its citizens. First the IRS, the State, then Health and Human Services, then Labor. As a customer I detest this unwarranted dragnet. Secondly, are they doing it to other companies? Gee whiz, is there a camera in my bathroom?
Yes they can. It's a court order. The information is being obtained LEGALLY!!! Plus, there's already a forum started. Please see :
Not sure why this is particularly hard for people to follow! The Guardian published the story because they received a leak. The leak was a copy of the court order compelling Verizon to ..... It is certain that all other major carriers are also impacted, the leaked document just happened to be for Verizon.
The legality of the aforementioned data transfer between Verizon Wireless and the NSA depends on how you want to look at it. First we must look at the legality of compliance by Verizon Wireless and there is no question about it this is 100% legal, there are confirmed documents and court orders requiring corporation and compliance with the requests made by the NSA.
Second we must look at the legality of the demands made by the NSA. The demands for compliance can only be legal if there is reason to believe that a person is somehow affiliated with the planning, funding, or cover-up of an illegal act, OR direct communication with first, second, or third parties to said act(s). so If person A is responsible for something illegal and talks to person B about it and then at a different time person B happens to talk to person C (even if they talk about an unrelated matter) all persons AB&C can have there data substantially "mined". Thirdly there comes a twist into play, if any person (knowing or not) comes into communication with one of the three parties A B or C they will have direct communication with one of the three parties "involved" and MAY become subject to the data mining. This however, requires that there be reasonable suspicion that they might be "involved".So as an overall summery Verizon Wireless acted both appropriately and legally but the Judge that signed the court orders DID NOT!
I called verizon customer service and all I got was "verizon complies with all court orders..."
THIS is good news. It would not bode well if Verizon ignored court orders since small claims court is probably the best way to get a billing dispute resolved. Imagine how people would complain if they ignored THOSE court orders.
Don't just call customer service, call people in their PR department and try to get them on our side. Verizon has lobbyists in DC that could help get change in the law. Here are numbers for Verizon's PR department:
Call you congressman as well!
House of Representatives:
They are the ones with the power to change the law and stop the NSA from doing this. Lets get Verizon on our side and convince Congress and the President to change the law!
Sad part, our representatives WANT this to occur. They will not change a thing. Only ones they work for are themselves. Why are gas prices so high with oil at an 85 year high in inventory? See how many reps have oil stock. Since we pay for their gas they use, they are happy to see high prices.
OK, back to issues with devices
Hey, Verizon customers. ALL phone records relating to call duration, number dialed or received from are part of the data turned over to the NSA on a DAILY basis!! The Govt "says" no actual voice recordings are included. I wonder if TEXT messages were included??
Also, you know it's just one keystroke away from turning over all of our billing data - credit card information, etc. If you don't think that is possible, then you are very naive. The NSA needs to follow the monbey trail of the people that they "identify" as suspicious, so you know credit card info, etc is next.
I wonder if Verizon is the preferred carrier of terrorists? Why not AT&T, T-Mobile, Spring, etc? If the Government has some suspects in mind, I don't believe they only make and receive calls to Verizon customers.
have you contacted your Congressman yet, because they authorized it.
VERIZON - let's put this plainly:
Either desist in your cooperation with these Orwellian tactics, or you're fired. I'll find another service provider, preferably one with a spine.
Vote with your feet, people. If VZW is the only major provider rolling over on this particular provision of the execrable Patriot Act, then we can and should signal our displeasure by taking our business elsewhere.
And note the "qualifier" MILLIONS (of records) -- as if there's MILLIONS of terrorists running 'round the U.S. It's obvious that this administration corrupts every possible extension within its target, Verizon included. So the Question becomes, how open-ended in this access of records? Ongoing? The govt, via Verizon, can simply sift thru its political enemies at will...and Verizon actually expects its customers to quietly acquiesce to this? Is this not a breach of contract?
All: I registered for this forum today...In my first post, my real name popped up...but I didn't place my real name as a "Screen name"...nor did I put my real name as a "Greeting name"... I called Verizon about this and they confirmed this is a current issue beyond my own account...meaning this can happen to ANY Verizon customer (or at least newly registered forum users) ... This shows that Verizon is so "COMMITTED" to PRIVACY issues that they not only release millions of metadata info pieces to the National Security Agency, but they reveal the real names of forum users, too! What good is a screen name if Verizon simply posts the customer name? @ the end of contract time, I'll never come back to Verizon...and may even leave before then.
Like others today, this post will be locked too because they do not like us posting our grievances on the forums about their blatant disregard for our privacy. Hear that VZW? I am now looking to leave you shortly, all 4 of my lines and $234/mo to someone else. LOCK THAT UP. Make sure the NSA sees all of these threads too.
By doing this is this not a breach of privacy stated in our contract? I believe it is without notification you may not turn over our records as stated in the contract I signed. My contracts are coming up soon and I will be moving on or get rid of cell service and go back to a home phone or walmart phone. Its a shame you put up no fight on this Verizon. Another company with zero ethics
Thank you for starting this topic!
If this does not stop I am going to go with Cricket or something else. I am tired of this bull and of this lame company not standing up to this. One more paybill and I am out! Freedom and Privacy is more important and I will make my stand. No more.
