USB error "Process com.android.settings stopped unexpectedly. Try again" since 8/28/2012

Since August 28 when our two stratospheres wereif updated by Verizon - we get this error message when going to Settings - USB

It doesn't let us change our options as before.

1. Need to know how to fix new software install issue so we can change our USB options on phone.

I can still attached it to my computer by USB and I get the same message but when I close it the USB Storage in use comes up and I can use the USB connection on my laptop.  The samsung usb files are still on the laptop.

2. Or other problem is our Desktop doesn't have the USB files on the Windows XP machine anymore.  Not sure how they got uninstalled so we cannot connect the USB to our desktop.

Need to know how/where to find files so we can install them on boyfriends PC so he/we can use our USB.

We have hard booted both phones.

Thanks.

This may be a temporary fix.  Go into Settings-Applications- Development(located on bottom). Select USB Debugging and follow instructions.  E.G. if it complains usb is already plugged in, unplug it, select debug, and replug in the device.  Then pull down the menu that hsould allow you to connect your device to the computer (USB prong symbol on top of screen).  I don't think it likes you going to the Settings-"USB settings", but this route seems to work.  When you're done, go back in and turn of debugging.

This thread reports similar issues: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/781362. A VZW rep there suggests a factory reset, which is apparently fairly common after an update like this.

I can understand this being a bit  AndroidSue!  When you state you have completed a hard boot are you referring to a factory reset here http://bit.ly/S48jaG ?  Also, please ensure the drivers are updated by following the appropriate visuals here http://bit.ly/Qxi0LL .  Have you made any non Verizon Wireless software changes to the devices?  Please share so I may help.  Thank you!

There is another thread where a fellow named Navy Dave offered this solution:

"

Howdy folks,

I had exactly the same problem with the update to firmware version 2.3.6 -- “Sorry…Process com.android.setting stopped unexpectedly. Try again”.  Very frustrating to say the least.  I, too, discovered the USB Debugging workaround, but I wasn't happy with getting an error message every time I plugged or unplugged my phone.  And like others have said, the system seemed to operate WORSE after the update.  Things are just not supposed to work that way.  And it looks like Verizon either does not know what to do about it, or they simply don't care since Galaxy S phones are practically dinosaurs now.  But I like dinosaurs Smiley Happy  OK, so here's what ended up working for me.  Standard disclaimer about your mileage may vary, blah, blah, blah.

Tap on Settings, then Applications, then Manage Applications, then select All.

Scroll all the way down until you reach Settings, then tap on that to open it.

You should see two 'buttons' that you can click -- "Force stop" and "Clear data"

Choose the "Clear data" option, then restart the phone.  In my case, I 'lost' my wallpaper (which I replaced in 15 seconds), but everything else was in tact.  Now, when I go into the "USB Settings", I no longer get an error nor do I get an error when plugging in to my computer's USB port.  Oh, and did I mention that the phone is more responsive now?  And maybe it's my imagination, but battery life is improved.  If only it would brew coffee ...

Hope this helps someone out there.  God bless America!!

I was a little concerned about what might actually be cleared, but decided to give it a try.  It worked great.  The only thing I've had to reset in the past four days has been the wallpaper.  Right now, this looks like the best overall solution.

Unfortunately the previous thread is closed (my guess is because of some guy's autoreply to emailed discussion updates) and I cannot thank Navy Dave.  So thanks to Navy Dave - wherever you are - and not thanks to Verizon Support for their recommendation of doing a Factory Reset.

This is really bad stuff from Verizon.  No warning that updates may break your phone, and very weak support when it does break your phone.

Thank you! Your suggestion worked for me and it appears all I lost was my wallpaper, too.  The Debugging steps did not solve my problem.

Thanx for the info. I also followed the above procedure on my Samsung Stratosphere and it worked great. Only had to reset my wallpaper. Note: The error above was displayed whenever I tapped on the "Battery use".
