I agree with Brian. I have been with VZW since '05. Partly out of loyalty because they have always treated me good, but mostly because of the following: Smart phones are great and you can do a lot with them. But the primary reason for having one is to make phone calls. I had T-mobile and Sprint from '02 to '05 and their service was sorely lacking.
I have yet to get a roaming indicator or dropped call in the last 8 years. THAT'S why I saty with VZW.
As to your contract, in the strictest terms, they don't have to let you upgrade for 24 months, but they give you a four month break. Moreover, if you want to go earlier, you have the option of paying full retail.
So my advice would be to try the other carriers. they let you go 14 days before your locked in. If you like them, drop VZW and eat the ETF.
