Hi,

I just got a Razr M.  Can I sync my calendar with my outlook calendar on my laptop?  If so... how?  (This is my first smartphone)

You'l have to use third-party software.  There used to be a way to sync Outlook's calendar with a Google calendar, which syncs with Android phones, but Google Sync is no longer available (as of Dec. 2012).  This thread may help:

You also could look into syncing your Outlook to Outlook.com, and then accessing it with your phone.

I recommend downloading Google Calendar Sync, still available at http://www.2shared.com/file/5CRks0qe/GoogleCalendarSync_Installer.html

I've found it to be much better than third-party solutions for syncing Android with Outlook.  Plus, it's free.

Google Calendar Sync is a deprecated technology that Google no longer supports. While it may still work, there is no guarantee it will in the future. Since Google is a web-based technology, changes they make on their back-end may break the Google Calendar Sync tool.

If you are looking for a reliable and permanent solution, a few dollars spent on third-party software is more than worth it. Third-party software also handles more data, such as contacts, categories, recurring calendar events, tasks, etc.

Just my two cents.

I agree.

If you haven't seen it, here's the link regarding Google Sync's end of life:

Here is another option, get a Windows phone, and the issue is solved.

There's no "may" about it, Google Calendar Sync works, it works without fuss, and it works reliably.  And there's no reason to fear it will quit working in the near future.  It's technology that continues to serve the single purpose of syncing calendar entries between Google and Outlook very well.

And it's free, while paid solutions cost up to $50 and many have additional annual subscription fees.  The ones I've tried (MarkSpace, Companionlink, have been a huge, complicated headache to use.  I agree that if you need to sync contacts and tasks, you really do need to go third-party.

Google continues to cripple us with its abandonment of syncing solutions with accepted industry norms like Outlook.  I love my new Galaxy Note 2, but iPhone does a much better job of keeping its stuff consolidated with desktop tools, as does BlackBerry.  This continuing Google failure threatens to chase me to a different mobile OS once my next upgrade is available.

How is the issue solved?  A windows 7 or windows 8 phone won't sync standalone Outlook without a 3rd party tool like companion link, will it?

I found a solution that is working for me.

Download GoogleCalendarSync_Installer from http://files.racs.com.au/CustUpdates/GoogleCalendarSync_Installer.exe.

It is 1138kb and dated 8 Apr 2011.  Version 0.9.4.1

I discovered that sometimes an appointment made on my Android tablet will sync to Google Calendar but will not sync to Outlook.  A fix for this is to make sure that I remove myself as a guest in the appointment.  It also helps to install the Google calendar app for the Android instead of using the calendar that comes with the Android.  The calendar that comes with the Android automatically makes me a guest when I create an appointment.  The Google calendar app doesn't seem to do that.
