Windows phone 8 - text messages sent to contacts are unreadable

I used to have a windows 7 phone and was able to text all my contacts just fine.  I recently upgraded to a windows phone 8 (HTC) and some of my contacts cannot read my text messages, they are in code (squares, symbols etc)  how do I fix this?
