Smartphone on basic plan without data?

My son lost his basic phone. I have my old Droid X which is not doing me much good in a drawer.  His phone line is currently deactivated due to the loss (a punishment), so I can't easily just activate it online and try it out.  Can the Droid X be activated on the line for use only as a basic phone?  And perhaps the wifi could be used at home?  That would be a bonus.  I've asked Verizon personnel if I can do this and they insist it won't work because the plan will recognize the coding of the phone.  Anyone try this?  I don't want to reactivate the line unless I'm confident it'll work.  (Verizon has already messed up the billing enough with the deactivation.  lol)  Thanks!

No, if you activate the Droid X, it will require a data plan be added to that line and remain active while the Droid X is activated on your son's line.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
