Please excuse me - I am knew to IPhone 5 - I would like to know if charges are applied when using Face Time with someone in Canada - I know that it would use data unless I switch it to Wi-Fi - I currently have a share plan of 4GB which I was told come with unlimited texting, video messaging, emails, talk, Pic and Mobile Hot Spot. Is it free when using data and mobile to mobile to anyone in US and/or not to anyone International?

Thank you for your help and sorry for sounding dumb.

No, charges are not applied. The only "charges" would be to your data allotment if you don't use WiFi.

I have used FaceTime from the US to folks on an Island in Georgian Bay, Ontario, with no Verizon Wireless charges applied to my account here in the US.  The person in Canada may have an impact on their Data Charges, depending on which service provider and plan they are contracted to.  I know that using a Rogers "Rocket" type of a device, even if you were to exceed your tiers monthly data allowance, you simply move up to the next pricing tier (there is no penalty).

As far as I know, face time is sort of related to streaming video so essentially it uses data, but I don't recall that you would be charged for calling others in other countries or location through the use of facetime.

That's a great question thediscoera! Good thing I have a great answer for you. As far as Facetime, there's no extra charges for you (like international long distance) for having a Facetime conversation with someone in Canada while you're in the United States, since it's not a phone call but a data connection. Whether it's someone in Canada, the US, or any other country, if you're not using WiFi then the Facetime conversation will simply deduct from your data allowance for the month.

It sounded like you were describing the 4 GB Share Everything (www.vzw.com/shareeverything) plan when you mentioned your allowance. The Share Everything plans include unlimited domestic minutes (to/from anyone number based in the United States), unlimited domestic text/picture/video messages, and then a shared allowance of data to use for emails, internet, video calling (like Facetime), Hotspot, etc.

If you're concerned where your data usage is for the month, you can always dial #DATA (#3282) from your phone or log into www.vzw.com/signin to see what your data usage for the month is at too.

Enjoy that great new iPhone!

Right, similar to there being no extra charges for using the browser to access a foreign website, it just subtracts data.  Of course, it matters where you are: if you were to use facetime or any other data application while out of the country, (and were foolish enough to be using Verizon rather than a local SIM!) you do get charged global data rates, which is as high as $20+ per MB (not GB!)
