Phone Upgrade with Unlimited Data

I was hoping that someone could give me some insight into the decision that I have to make.  I currently am up for an upgrade from the Droid X that I have had for the past two years and while I loved this phone I have been thinking of upgrading to the iPhone due to convenience.  I currently carry both around with me due to the convenience of docking the ipad everywhere for music.  I had been waiting for the iPhone 5 that way I would be starting my two years with the newest version of this device.  Verizon's new plan to cancel my unlimited Data if I wait for this new phone has made me question this decision.  Should I upgrade now to the iPhone 4s or to the Razr Max to keep my Unlimited Data or wait for the new iPhone 5.  I know that the shared plans go into affect as of June 28th so I really have to decide by then.

I also have a related question.  My wife is interested to switching service to Verizon from TMobile.  If I were to upgrade to a phone that has 4G before June 28th and keep my Unlimited data, could my wife buy the iPhone 5 when it comes out and then we swap phone so that I can use it and not loose my Unlimited Data because I am simply switching phones?  Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.  I have been debating dropping Verizon all together over the loss of the Unlimited Data and believe me that option is still on the table.  I have been a Verizon customer since around 2004 and want to remain loyal but this is making me question my Loyalty.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Well, you have a couple of options. You can get the iphone 4s (which will be upgradable to the new iOS6 which will be on thenew iphone 5) or get any other phone before the 28. 2. Yes you can switch phones and keep the unimited data. Or you can buy the phone outright and keep unlimited data. Switching to another company because unlimted data is going away is unreasonable. Where you gonna go, Sprint? And have questionable service? They are the only ones that have unlimited data, and to be honest seeing as how noone knows the carriers that will have the new phone, just stay where you are, man. Thats my 2c.

This is a question everyone has to ask themselves, and they also have to do a little research. The first question is, if you were to look at your Verizon bills, how much data do you use during a high/average month? I think that is 1 of the most important questions you have to ask yourself. If you are over 2GB, then I think you need to consider the options you mentioned, like get the phone now that your wife wants to have, and then when she adds her line, she will get the 2GB data plan and you can then swap phones. The bad part about the iPhone 4S, it is not 4G LTE, so you will still be on the 3G network. If you got the RAZR MAXX, you will be 4G LTE.

There certainly are alot of things to think about, and it comes down to your needs/wants and your wallet.

Has it actually been clarified by Verizon that 3G smartphone unlimited data won't carry over to 4G unlimited?  Seems like that's still a gray area.

Well PJ this is what i'm wondering Were i live here in Kansas i would say there is about 50 to 65% of Kansas that is still 3G an in some parts of Ks it is only 1X but Your cities like Wichita, KC Ks, Dodge City ,Garden City Hays,  And Great Bend that are 4G: If this is the Case there are allot of people Like Me with a 4G phone actually 2 Now that are still in a 3G only area and might be for a While so it makes wonder how they would Justify that..

Actually, that has never been a question, the unlimited plan is not limited to which network you are on. Never has. In fact, I just went through 2 smartphone upgrades with mine and my wifes phones. We went from the Fascinate/Continuum (3G phones) to the RAZR MAXX (Both of us, and of course it is 4G), and when I mentioned my unlimited data plans, they looked at me as if I had a 2nd head on my shoulders and asked "Of course you keep your unlimited data on the new phone, there is no reason why you would not." It has been 2 months, and my plan still shows unlimited.

I don't think there is any grey area there...

That may be the case at the moment, but after the 28th might be a different story. The smartphone unlimited data plan might not change when a person switches from a 3G only smartphone to a 4G smartphone, but there were a bunch of other feature code lines that were changed and added to my account I temporarily switched to a 3G smartphone from a 4G smartphone and back again last summer.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

You never know what they will do next after the 28th...
