The issue isn't only making profit.  It's all about creating wealth for your shareholders.

The problem with business today is, if they aren't making more profit than they did the year before, they must be failing, so shareholders bolt.  Funny thing is, a company may make a billion in profit this year, but if they only make 900 million next year, it looks bad.

With the wireless market nearly saturated (nearly everyone that wants a cell phone has one), Verizon can only do one thing -- raise prices -- in order to increase profits for their shareholders.

Of course, this could come back to bite them in the ass, if the customers all jump ship due to their pricing strategies.

I really don't get why they can't just do both. They say customers want shared data. Well this customer doesn't. I have 1 device with no plans to ever own more than 1 network device (if I ever buy a tablet it will be Wi-Fi only). Shared data is useless to me. Sure it might be great for some people that have 3+ devices or families or what not, or it might not be, I don't know, I just know that all it amounts to is a rate hike for me and the hassle of having to manage data and always keep Wi-Fi on. I want a carrier to give me what I signed up for when I first got a smartphone with Verizon whenever the Droid 1 came out. 100 minutes (I only ever need 450 the minimum offered twice in the 10 years I've been a customer), unlimited text (I actually use a lot of these), and true unlimited data with no throttling. I don't get why this is such a difficult concept. I don't care if it costs them more money to run. If that's the case they should've never offered it in the first place. I wouldn't be as mad if they hadn't done the old bait & switch on us. They said not even a year ago they wouldn't kill unlimited data and they are now going to unless you want to pay full retail for a new device (or keep your old one, but let's face it, it will eventually break or you'll just want something new/better). My contract doesn't expire til 2014, but unless they change their tune on this big time, I will be leaving when it expires for a company that actually offers what I want. And if no company is offering that by 2014 then I guess I will use Wi-Fi only except when I have to make calls or what not.

I noticed how Verizon conveniently set my upgrade date as 6/28.  I am currently on the old Nationwide 450 min voice  with 250 texts and unlimited Data package, I pay $33.99 for voice, 26.39 for data, and $5 for texts.  I never even come close to using either the 450 min or the 250 texts.  If I do not want to pay full retail for an upgrade phone on 6/28 I will be forced to pay for a 700 min plan with unlimited texts and pay more for only 2GB of Data.  I do not have a family, I do not us crappy 3G for anything other than maybe downloading an app or checking e-mail, I either hook up to my home Wi-Fi (have a Kindle Fire and not an overpriced iPad) or use the plethora of free Wi-Fi throughout Seattle(have a Kindle Fire and not an overpriced iPad).  And Verizon only gives a 12% military discount.  I have been seriously looking at Sprint, they give a 15% military discount and I can get a plan that is not designed for only those who breed like rabbits, and waste time squinting at movies on tiny screens.
