Re: Droid's Bionic restarts itself, brand new

My Droid Bionic has also been turning itself on after a full "power off" ever since I first got it a couple months ago.  It happens almost half the time I "power off" the Bionic at home.

No "pockets" or accidental touches involved. I simply set the Bionic down on my desk (frequently while it's still in the power-off shut-down cycle), and watch it shut all the way off.  Or so it seems.  Without the phone being touched, and while I'm still sitting at the desk, about half the time, and about 2 to 5 minutes later, it enters the power-up routine.  The phone is NOT plugged into a charger at the time.

Almost always, shutting the phone off a second time does the trick (it doesn't turn itself on again). Recently, however, it did actually turn itself on a second time, again while I was sitting there with the phone on the desk beside me, and again, not plugged into the charger.

I miss the days then "power off" really meant that all power was off.  Yes, I know that lots of devices plugged into house current never reall turn themselves completely off. But an "unplugged' phone?  At least it's not calling "skynet" on its own.

So what happens when you don't board a plane?"

I'm sorry, I get it now. The phone is restarting after you power it down. I mis-read.

Hi memh5590,

I understand your discontent. It must be frustrating to experience issues after a software update. Please note that while software updates are developed by phone manufacturers to improve the phone's performance, many times the updated software conflicts with some 3rd party applications not originally developed for the latest software update being installed.

My resources indicate that a factory reset has resolved this and other issues after a software update. Please refer to this LINK and enter hard reset and your phone model in the Search Support field for instructions to process a Factory Reset on your devices.

I trust that a factory reset will resolve the issues you are experiencing after the software update on your devices.

I lose my data network when the verizon phone next to me has as least 3G.  It happens on the road as well as in a stationary postition.  I did the updates (*228) each time and this did not solve the problem.

I to had a Bionic with a restart issue.  Seems the day I got it, it got progressively worse.  Ok, reading posts...maybe third party software.  At one point in time the phone was locked in an endless cycle of restarts, even a battery pull didn't work.  Boot Menu worked to resolve the endless cycle.

Actions taken to resolve the restart issue:

- Remove the battery and reinstall it....nothing

- Reboot, nothing

- I don't install any software outside of what was installed on phone and do another reboot....nothing.

- I get into the boot menu and format/reinstall operating system....nothing

Contacted support, suprised to talk to americans and they VERY friendly and helpful.  Support sends me to Tech Support...again a friendly voice.  Informed the Tech Support guy all actions taken to remedy issue....he says we'll replace it!  WOW, I didn't have to jump thru flaming hoops of fire!  Thanks for the support and now I have the phone thats been running for 7 hrs and "Fingers Crossed"  hasn't restarted.

  1. I also had the problem of my bionic shutting itself off. I went to my local verizon store and went through three new boinics all with the same problem. I even contacted Motorola and just for the canned response offering a refurbished certified like new phone.  So I decided to do a factory reset and only installed my third party apps a week at q time to see if maybe one was causing it.  Sure enough, it was the Starbucks app that was causing the problem. I do miss the Starbucks app with convenient paying by scanning my phone, but I am extremely happy that I do not get the shut off problems that I had before. I love my Bionic now. Great phone!

My issue was definetely the Bionic.  After I received my recertified replacement and installing all my apps, I have had only one reboot in 22 hrs of up time or 1 week.  Now I'm a Happy Droid Bionic owner.  Not sure what caused the one reboot, but heck, its better than a reboot almost every hour....that was frustrating!

Possible solution to at least some spontaneous restarts found!

I have a Droid Bionic, about a year old, that suddenly started restarting itself after being turned "power off." That is to say, it wouldn't stay powered off; otherwise the phone worked fine.

I tried taking the battery out, but that did not help. I also tried Safe Mode, but that didn't help either. I didn't want to do a hard reset because of the work necessary to restore everything the way I had it.

Then, by chance, I noticed that the Power Control widget had the Sync icon selected, which is the way it's always been. Since that icon means to keep the phone synced (duh), I though maybe it was making the phone go back on by itself to....sync!

So, I turned Sync icon off, and powered off the phone. And, guess what? No more spontaneous restarting. The phone stayed off!

Then, I turned the Bionic back on, and then set Sync back to "on." I powered off the phone and....it stayed off!

Problem solved, but I have no idea why.

Please note my restart problem was the least bothersome; it was not like the continuous restarts some have reported, but it's worth a try.
