Samsung Brightside sd card and MP3 file issues

Hi there, I too just got a Brightside for my daughter and have had trouble getting music on it. Here are some pointers I've discovered and am now able to put music on now:

1 - it only plays mp3's

2 - u have to format the sd card while in the phone. Go to settings> memory> phone card> format (or there about... I'm actually still trying to get it to reflect the artist, title, etc... right now so I cannot look)

3 - I actually had to go into security and restore factory defaults before re-trying to add music... i had originall had m4a and mp3's on there (the default security password is the last four digits of your phone number)

4 - you can get iTunes converting instruction here http://myrightbrain.wordpress.com/2006/06/11/how-to-convert-mp4-audio-files-to-mp3-using-itunes/

5 - you can use Windows Media Player by connecting phone as USB mass storage, then specify the jump that is the SD card (r click, properties to look at size to determine). After you use it though, you have to reconnect, go to Exlorer (the file system window) and copy all the songs out of the "Music" folder you'll see on your SD card and paste into the "_my music" folder on your SD card (i had to pull the songs out of the folders in order to see and play on the phone though)

6 - what i'm testing now is whether processing via WMP "stamps" the songs with ARTIST, GENRE, and TITLE because when I simply copied from my PC's Music folder, the show and play, but were not categorized by artist, genre or title... all except for 3 that I think were the ones I pulled out of that Windows Media Player "Music" folder it created on the phone's SD card.

Feel free to share your success or non-success and I will see if I can help further...

Good luck! 🙂

I'm not sure I'm entering info I would like to have addressed in the right spot or not as I find this entire site to be not so user friendly.  I am quite computer literate, not an IT but I can navigate any Windows OS just fine.  I received my Brightside SCH u380 about 12 March and have been fighting with it every day since.  I have surfed site after site including of course Verizon and Samsung and am very surprised to see the many things written by people who are having issues with the Brightside. One even has in very large font WARNING!  The sd Micro Disk is inserted differently in the u380...  Baloney!  SD built the tiny little thing to be idiot proof.  It is "notched" on one side and after reading that article I carefully extracted the disk and again carefully tried to fit it in the slot exactly as described there and because it is notched for "form fitting" it simply would not be inserted anyway except the way it was designed.

Also I find that using a READER is far superior to direct connect by going through Mass Storage.  The reader accepts the Micro Disk directly into a slot on it's back and the reader is inserted into a USB port on your PC.  That way anything you write or copy goes directly to the disk.  You are correct that mp3 is the format for all music.  SOUNDS will read wav.

A problem I am having that has frustrated me to the point of just about returning this thing before my 30 days are up is that I go through the steps, CORRECTLY copy to the card music or sounds I know are correctly formatted and make sure they are dragged and dropped into the appropriate folder on the card, i.e. MUSIC for music, SOUNDS for sounds - then open the card and look to make sure all is where it is supposed to be the way it is supposed to be but when I PROPERLY load the SD card into the phone the things I just added are simply not there and the phone cannot find them.  It is NOT a memory issue.  I am using a 16 gig SAMSUNG HC MicroSD confirmed on the Samsung site as being compatible, properly formatted before loading any data, and the ONLY reason I can come up with for the "non-disclosure" is that it must be a Verizon proprietary thing - as the ridiculous pictures Verizon has READ ONLY and unreachable as embedded in their programming and they cannot be deleted or ignored.  SONGS , PICTURES, SOUNDS that I have loaded, wiped clean the Micro Disk, reformatted all I'm going to reformat it (Reformatting the Micro Disk too much shortens its life) and BRIGHTSIDE simply refuses to recognize any of it.

The absolute worst, however, is that I have volumes of videos from 17 seconds to 7:05 seconds that I have built separate folders for copies made to format them to mp4, H263, H264, 3G2 and 3GP and best of all, I absolutely own all of them as either personally and professionally produced, tagged, my own metadata with no possibility of any DRM violation and Verizon has hijacked the whole thing with VCAST.  I don't like VCAST, I don't want VCAST, I have not downloaded it as an app and in fact have blocked it but THERE IT IS, right in my video player section overlapping my own logos and when tapped to play I get, "This material is protected by copyright". OR, there is blue circle with white polka-dots and the international red circle with left to right, 11 O;Clock to 5 O;Clock solid red line meaning "DO NOT ENTER, TOUCH, BOTHER, or in any way DISTURB.  Tapping on it brings up NOT AVAILABLE with a red upside down triangle and an exclamation mark in the middle.  This is Verizon PROPRIETARY baloney stopping my personal and private material because i refuse to purchase their software.  I think it's more than enough... I'll be at the nearest Verizon outlet AM tomorrow.

If you got it from Verizon it's only 14 days.

"Also I find that using a READER is far superior to direct connect by going through Mass Storage [...] That way anything you write or copy goes directly to the disk."

I agree that a reader has an advantage. But I disagree with you about what the advantage is. When you use the phone's USB Mass Storage mode, files are being written  to the memory card; but the write speed in this mode is (much) slower than the write speed when the memory card is in a reader plugged into the computer.

"You are correct that mp3 is the format for all music."

While Verizon is downgrading or removing features from currently released basic phones, it would surprise me immensely if Verizon forced basic phones to support just one format. We have the Samsung u370 which is the immediate predecessor of the u380. Our u370 and LG vx8370 play mp3, m4a, and wma files. Both of you are experiencing the identical findings of not being able to play non mp3 files is hard to argue with. But I'm really hoping that there's some error that both of you are making.

Aarius:

As far as playing videos, the process for playing them as described in the u380 manual is identical to the process that we use for playing videos on our LG vx8370, Samsung u370, and Casio Ravine 2. Our Samsung u370 and Casio Ravine 2 are capable of playing 3g2, simple profile mpeg-4 mp4, and h264 basic profile videos, while our LG vx8370 is capable of playing 3g2 and simple profile mpeg-4 mp4 files. I haven't ever had to use VCAST to play the videos, and I haven't ever had to download any software to play the videos.

So hopefully the steps below should result in being able to play a video on the u380.

Page 75 of the u380 Brightside manual:

"Use 'My Videos' to view and manage videos stored on your phone.

For more information, see 'My Videos' on page 88.

From a Home screen, touch 'Media Center' -> 'Picture & Video' -> 'My Videos'"

Here's a link to the manual:

"SONGS , PICTURES, SOUNDS that I have loaded, wiped clean the Micro Disk, reformatted all I'm going to reformat it (Reformatting the Micro Disk too much shortens its life) and BRIGHTSIDE simply refuses to recognize any of it."

Another u380 customer was able to load pictures onto his/her u380 this way:

"Reviewed by dezzyphone, New haven, CT on March 7, 2012

[...] I also had difficulty with accessing my pictures on my sd card. If the card is from a old phone you have to get the pictures file renamed. this phone uses picture not pics [...]"

Thanks!  I was confounded until I read your tip to put the card in the phone BEFORE putting music on it.  Definitely is the way to go with this phone!!
