Actually I was asking NuDroidUser what his phone model was.

I do have the Samsung Fascinate, but when this topic came around a year or so ago, other manufacturers' phone could not either.

What's funny, the Fascinate is now on Gingerbread, and it can indeed now change the ringtone on Google contacts. Must have happened with the updates.

I was able to have a custom ringtone for contacts on a HTC DROID Eris through Android 1.5 to Android 2.3 and the versions of the OS between.

I think Motorola android phones had the option for quite some time.

Just to say I've got a Samsung Stratosphere with Android 2.3, and it has always had the ability to specify ringtones for individual contacts. Seems like Samsung did indeed get on the ball with the Gingerbread update.

It must have been the Gingerbread update. I know that I have held in my hands a Samsung Fascinate when it had Eclair (Android 2.1) and the same phone on Android 2.2 (FroYo) and it didn't have the option to set custom ringtones for Google contacts. It worked for Phone contacts. I haven't had a chance to check it after the Gingerbread update.
