I recently upgraded from flip phone to the Pantech Breakout. I used the recommended process with Backup Assistant to transfer my contacts between phones and then proceeded to also set up a Gmail account and sync with my home Outlook Account. Now my phone has duplicated contacts and the calendar has duplicate birthday and Anniversary announcements for the same people. It looks to me like it is caused by Gmail and Verizon contacts both existing in parallel. Should I just delete the verizon contacts and backup assistant now that I have Gmail? Why does Backup Assistant not backup the contacts in the phone that were put their by the Gmail sync.

Hello sol1109,
I can assist you with your contacts. It seems to me that the contacts have duplicated because you are using too many syncing systems. Since you can not unsync Google, I recommend to unsync the Backup Assistant. Follow the steps below to unsync Backup Assistant from your device:
- Settings
- Accounts & Sync
- Backup Assistant
- Uncheck it to unsync
If unsyncing, does not delete the duplicate contacts you may need to delete the duplicate contacts first before unsyncing.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thank you,
Lena A.

I do not see a place to "UNCHECK" the sync. The backup assistant page has
four sections.
- Backup Now button and statistical data on the backup
- Recuring Sync, which has 5 timing intervals for backing up. I just
changed this to "Manual".

Hi sol1109:
The steps that Lena provided above need to be performed on the device. Settings> Accounts & Sync> Backup Assistant> Uncheck it. This will disable the syncing operation from Backup Assistant. Let us know if the steps worked with you.
Thanks,

I was refering to my screen on the device. I have resolved my issue by
setting interval to manual and deleting my contacts from my verizon.

As long as you stick with Android phones the gmail sync will be enought, if you ever switch to something else you might need the back assistant.

The bad part about using gmail contacts as apposed to phone contacts is you cannot set custom ringtones to gmail contacts, where you can to normal phone contacts. I am sure there are also other things you cannot do to gmail contacts, but I am not sure. That was the biggest thing for me, I have a few people that I want to have custom tones, and for that they need to be phone contacts.
Hope this helps.

Select your contact them press > menu key > option > Ringtone. Just tried it and it allows me to select a ringtone for each contact with the default being "Default".
