Droid X running Android 2.3.3, Moto System 4.5.602.MB810
Hello. I have seen ample information on using the Droid X as a WiFi Hotspot, using Verizon's Data Plan, but I have had difficulty finding information on an apparently unusual variation of this (see below). Feel free to direct me to a forum answer if it does exist, as I have searched, but had no luck here, or in a net search engine.
Questions:
1) Is it possible to connect a computer (PC running XP) to a Droid X via USB in order to use the phone's WiFi to connect to a wireless router elsewhere in the home?
2) If not "yes" above, is there a phone that does in Verizon's selections.
A diagram for those who love them:
Computer====>Internet
Computer-->USB Cord-->Phone WiFi-->Wireless Router-->Cable Modem-->Internet = Yes/No?
What I won't do: I will not root my phone.
Issue/Testing: I have tried this, turing on both WiFi (phone) and USE Tethering. Though my phone WiFi is on and connected to my wireless router, 3G starts up (both WiFi and 3G Icons appear at the same time) and any attempt to access the 'net is met with the Mobile Hotspot signup screen (which, as mentioned, I am not trying to access in the first place). If this capability does not currently exist, it would be a great addition to the lineup for those computers without WiFi capability built-in.

My best advice for you, get a usb WiFi adapter for your computer.

Much easier than trying to configure your phone to do the same job, and I suspect that you might have to root your phone to have the possibility to do it.

I think you misunderstand what the Hotspot is and how to use it.... First you have to have the hotspot feature added to your plan to use this feature...
The Hotspot allows your phone to act like a router and you can connect from pc by wifi to the phone and use the data from phone to access the internet..
Heres the plans avalible... http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/plans/?page=mobileBroadband
USB Modems & Dedicated Mobile HotspotsDuration Data Amount Monthly Access
Day 100MB $15 Week 300MB $30 Month 1GB $50 Month 5GB $80 No activation or reconnection fees, and no overage charges.

Wildman
My understanding is the OP wanting to turn his phone into a WiFi device because his computer doesn't have WiFi. That is why I suggested getting a wifi usb adapter. Much easier to work with.

I understand and meant no disrespect to you I was just responding to his post, your suggestion is a good one but I was just trying to make it clear to them what the purpose for the Hotspot feature is for before they activate the service by opening app and trying to use it or get it set up and not realize they will be charged since the feature is a pay as you go feature as well ....

Thank you both for your timely responses and assistance.
Curtterp is correct. I am trying to see if I can use my phone more as akin to that Netgear WiFi USB device to connect to my WiFi Router (home network connection), rather than to connect to Verizon's data network (i.e. not to use the Hotspot, but as a WiFi pass-through). If this is not possible without rooting, then I will have to find another means. Thank you for the USB link as an alternative, Cutterp, and thank you for your concern, Wildman.

I wasnt trying to suggest to use this option and I understood what you was wanting but I figured I save you a surprise bill if you attemtp to use it as a hotspot...
curtterp suggestion is the best way to go because the feature to use the device as a network pass through isnt possible on the device in a stock state.
Hope you get it going the way you like...

Never felt disrespected (No way no how..... you are too good and nice )
Just wasn't sure if you were thinking down those lines or not. I wasn't thinking along the lines of hotspot charges because it was only going to be a wifi adapter.
