I Am Receiving Multiple Duplicate Text Messages

I can't remember if this happened before I upgraded to Gingerbread but it's definitely happening now. Almost every single text message that I receive comes in multiple times, sometimes up to four times for each message. Often they will come one right after another but sometimes they'll come in hours later. Resetting and battery pulls have done nothing and I don't want to do a hard reset unless it's absolutely necessary.

I'm not sure if this is related but I also can't sem to receive picture messages anymore. It constantly asks me to "Download" or "Reject" the picture and if I touch "Download", it tries to load but ultimately it always comes up with an error.

There are so many issues that could be causing this.  I've received multiple text messages from smartphones and regular phones.  If I'm not mistaken, I would not attribute this to any text messaging overage (do check your details though). What I mean by this is your phone is displaying the content downloaded from the network multiple times (almost as if the phone doesn't recognize that the SMS has already been received).  This should not generate any overages because the record on the network for an incoming SMS is sender -> receiver. That is the record you are billed for. So, if your issue with the whole duplicate text is billing, check your text message details. Visit www.vzw.com > Sign in as the Account Holder > Usage Details (under My Usage)> Select the line> View Messaging Details.  Compare your duplicate texts records to the billing records and see if they line up. If they do, contact customer service.

There is also a possibility that people are having a problem with their handset sending multiple text messages.  I say this because I have a basic phone, and I have received multiple text messages from my brother who has a Droid X.  Of course if the sender is having issues with multiple text messages sending, you will have multiple text messages received, and you will of course have a billed record for each message that is transmitted to the cell number. I would attempt to clear the cache on the messaging app and start there. Clearing the cache of the messaging app can be done under Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> All> Messaging> Clear Cache/Data/Force Stop.  Warning: This will likely remove your email accounts and erase all text messages.

If none of that works, you can try 1 of 2 things:

1) Master reset.

2) Try a 3rd party text messaging app. A search in the Market for "Text Messaging" should yield plenty of results.

Please post results/findings to help the community with this along with any other troubleshooting tips.

Thanks,

A number of users reported clearing their cache seem to help.... You can give it a try...

 Wiping cache partition

  • Power off
  • Power On Holding Home Key
  • When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
  • Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
  • Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

I use 1-click cleaner by OPDA team that also seems to do this well..  1Tap Cleaner Free by Sam Lu is another good one also..

I know a lot of the times, getting multiple texts is an issue on the sender's side. I get it from time to time, mostly with Verizon and Cricket users. I've also been told I've sent the text to someone 2 or 3 times, without knowing.

I cleared my cache so I'm just waiting to see if I get anymore duplicates. I receive them from multiple senders, including the MLB updates that I get.

It appeared to work at first but I once again started receiving duplicate text messages. It's not as frequent and, so far, I've only received two duplicates (as opposed to the four I was receiving). Any other suggestions?

How many SMS application do you have installed? I had that problem when testing out a few apps for SMS messaging.

I researched more on this issue and found nothing related to duplicate messages.  If clearing the cache hasn't corrected the issue. I would move on to a master reset. Go to Settings>Privacy>Factory Data reset>Erase Phone>Reset Phone. Let the phone reboot then follow the on-screen instructions for activation and set up.  Make sure your personal info is backed up to Google. The SD card will not be effected by the reset.

Have a great day!

I did the master reset. It took me about two hours to reset the phone and get all of my apps, contacts and settings restored. A little over 24 hours after resetting the phone, I once again received a duplicate message. The next day, I received three duplicate messages. So far, it's only been two messages but, if the pattern holds from last time, it'll steadily increase over time until my phone just keeps going off because I'm receiving a message a dozen times or more (sometimes over the span of a few hours). Also, the reset has introduced a new problem that didn't formerly exist: my text message ringtone (the default Droid tone) will now go off randomly and, when I check my phone, there are no new messages at all. At this point, I assume that my phone needs to be replaced, as no one else seems to be experiencing this problem. I've had the phone for nine months so I assume it'll cost money to replace; money that I don't have. It that's the case, I guess I'll have to deal with going crazy from constantly hearing my phone go off.

If there is no physical or water damage to the phone, a warranty replacement will be free since you are still within the 1 year warranty period.

However, this sounds like an App issue. Are you using any 3rd party texting or notification apps from the market, other than the stock messaging app that came with the phone?

If so, I'd advise that you delete those temporarily to see if the problems stop. If not, go into your Application settings, select Manage Apps, and see which ones have access to your SMS messages - those could potentially affect your texting and be causing this problem. Delete those for a while and see if the problem still persists. If you just cannot get it to stop, take it to a Verizon store and show them what's happening, and they'd be happy to send you a warranty replacement X.

Has anyone determined that this not a network issue? Sure sounds possible to me and worth asking around the network department.
