1. Does the iPhone 4 have the features you need, or do you think 5 will have something you really want that's not currently available?
2. Is it important to you to have the latest and greatest?
Only you can decide, but I believe in buying and enjoying now. There is no guarantee iPhone 5 will be on Verizon this summer. But, as mdram said, if you go with the iP4, be confident in your decision ... don't detract from your iPhone enjoyment by second-guessing yourself for the next 20 months.
Good luck deciding!

To add to this...weigh the possibilites...if you wait and VZ does get the next iPhone this summer will having unlimited data versus tiered plans be imporant to you? Although no one knows what the future data plans will be this is a rumor fueled by the "limited time" status given to the offering of unlimited data by Verizon. For some, tiered data will be welcomed. For others, it will be something else to complain about. I would say instead of focusing on the rumored next iPhone look at everything the iPhone 4 does and how the current features fits your needs. If you know you're one of those people that would get upset a few months after buying a phone that a newer one came out (even if it only offers small changes) then you might want to wait...but that's a risk with any phone you buy.

RIght! This is the right way to approach it.
So for me, there are two key "missing" features, in the sense that these features are available on other Verizon phones (but not both on the same phones): LTE and a global GSM capability. Not important to everyone of course, but enough to stop me considering the iPhone 4.
(By all we read, it is unlikely that the iPhone 5 will have LTE, so it will still be out for me, but your feature list and iPhone 5 expected feature list is probably different!)

Interesting though... if the 'rumor' proves to be true and the iPhone 5 is now going to be released fall of this year, I wonder if it will be 4G/LTE? The longer Apple waits to jump into the 4G game, the more Android is going to dig itself in. With a early summer release of the iPhone 5 and it not being 4G capable, then it was a sure bet that the following year (2012) the iPhone 6 would be. Now if the iPhone 5 is released later, and assuming that it gets a full year before a new model arrives, that would push the next iPhone until fall of 2012. The plot thickens yet again!

In all likely hood it's delayed due to what happened in Japan. Though the iPhone is constructed in China most of the parts are ordered from Japan as with most of their other parts in their desktops and laptops. They want to stock up before releasing a product so this may be the cause of the delay. They could also be delaying due to the contract with AT&T being over and they are no longer carrying the iPhone. As September is the usual release time for the European iPhones.
LTE more than likely will not happen even with the delay. It's not widespread enough throughout the world for them to even consider it.

the iphone 4 on vzw has a radio chip that can be a world phone, its the same on in the d2 global.
it would just take a little effort on the part of apple to make it one
but you need to wait for the wwdc to see what they are gonna do

more speculation
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/no-iphone-5-at-wwdc-this-year-thats-how-it-looks-from-here/
Of course if that pans out, all eyes are going to be on the company's Fall event, which seems like an increasingly likely place to launch a new phone -- especially considering the fact that the iPod's place in Apple's lineup has become diminished thanks to the success of its mobile devices. The timing also sets Apple up nicely for a brisk season of holiday phone purchases. As for the iPad, Daring Fireball's John Gruber speculated that we might see some kind of new model at this year's Fall event, and while that seems highly unlikely to us given the recent launch of the iPad 2, a new tablet would make a perfect companion to that new phone. What September holds is pure speculation right now, but for the time being, it looks like you can just get comfortable with your iPhone 4.
