Phone going Haywire

I have the Droid X and have had no problems since I got it 4-5 months ago.  However, it is now going haywire.  It randomly opens my calendar, adds a new calendar entry, jumps around when trying to enter new contacts, starts the dialer.  Its difficult to even send a text message because the cursor keeps jumping to other places or other screens randomly popup.  It is almost like one of the touch points or something is stuck.  What can I do?  I've left the phone off for a while and I've also tried removing the battery.

Any other ideas?  I'm leaving on a business trip tomorrow and really need my phone working.

Yikes!

All I can suggest is the infamous Hard Reset of the phone following this procedure...

Follow these settings during restore to avoid issues being restored automatically.

1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy

2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone

3. After reset is complete, activate Phone but do not input Google Email information

4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"

5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.

Before I do this, I assume this means I will need to reinstall all my apps?  I also do a sync to my corporate email system, mostly for my calendar and contacts.  I guess I'll lose all that and need to get it all set up again.  Anyone have any other alternatives?

One more thing, why can't I use automatic restore?  over time, it will get harder and harder to manually restore my phone to where it was.

Yeah, it does, unfortunately. 

I think there is a way to re-format the OS without losing things (hope I have that right, I've not done it..

Hopefully, someone will mention the possibility here.

Thank you gerio for your help. A factory reset should resolve the problem. However, the issue you have described about random movement of your screen is known to be caused by anti-virus apps.   You should uninstall the app directly from the Google Market, press the Menu key --> Downloads. If you do the master reset be sure not to re-download the app if it was previously downloaded. If you are still having the issue, your phone may need to be replaced sorry to say. Please let us know if you need further troubleshooting steps.

As for the automatic restore question, you can leave it checked but keep in mind sometimes issues are caused by apps. It may be better to manual re-download your apps to see if you can find what app is triggering issues. Additionally you shouldn't have to master reset your phone often.

Thank you GinaH for being here and helping us all.  Since the OP's problem is known to be caused by a certain type of app, is there some listing or other information about apps and known problems they may cause?  That might help stop people from installing 'bad' apps, and experiencing problems with their phone.

I don't believe there is a list of good/bad/terrible apps, wish there were. However, before I download/install any apps, I read the reviews. Reading them will tell you if it's an apps you want or don't want. If there is an apps I'm interested in but it has no reviews, I don't even try.

Not casting aspersions on the proposed solution. Wondering if the OP's problem was solved.

I've had similar strange experiences on two separate occasions when I allowed moisture on the display glass. Both times, my phone acted erratically, very similar to what was described in the original post.

Both times, I shut my phone off and let it sit for a few minutes after wiping all the moisture off of it. Both times, it was fine after power up.

I'm not talking dropping it in the sink, or toilet, either. I'm talking a very slight mist outside.

You could always try the:

 funambol sync

its a free app in the market, 

if it does not work for just your text let me know, there are a few ways we can get them to your new phone. we will try the simple things first
