If they're no longer saved to the device, they're only in the system for five days.
Either way, you will also need a subpoena.

You can also print records from the My Verizon account showing the dates, times, origin, destination regarding the number text messaged back and forth.
The actual content would not be available, but the details surrounding the message are readiliy available via your My Verizon account through the My Bill > Bill Details for invoices dating back 1 year.

Unless it is saved on the device, there is no way to retrieve this information. The only way I could possibly think of would be thorugh a police report that would then require a subpoena to be filed on your line to retrieve any archived information on VZW's end.

Hi - ok, I realize that I need a subpoena to get the content of past text messages. My question is - how long is the content saved for?
If I go through the cost/time to get a subpoena for the text records, how can I be sure that I will any? I have read that they are only
stored on Verizon's server for 5 days if they are deleted from the device? Is that true or are they stored indefinetely to be available
by subpoena?
Thank you!!
