Using Data Plan to Send "Free" Texting ?

I have a friend who has Verizon as his carrier and uses the first generation Droid. He says he is able to do text messaging for free because it is part of his data plan. He claims he didn't have to add on a texting package. Is this at all possible? And he is using the standard texting app that comes with the Android OS.

(BTW - Generally speaking, texting is done via the voice plan and not the data plan, correct?)

If he is using the standard texting app that comes with the Android OS, his texting IS NOT PART OF HIS DATA PLAN. Is he part of a Family Plan and is the plan owner. Does he actually know what services he has. There may or may not be texting apps out there that use the data plan for texting, I don't know. The STANDARD texting app, does not.

A Talk & Text plan has texting included in the plan price, and you will not have to add on a "texting package", but you are not getting free texting. It is included in the plan price.

A Talk plan does not have texting included in the plan price, and you will either have to add on a "texting package" or pay per text prices.

Hope this helps.

Texting has its own plan. Since I don't text, I do not know what they are, but I do know that they are separate from the data plan or the talk plan. Hmmm! Has your friend received the bill yet?

He is checking. He has not gotten back to me yet. It would makes sense if he has some kind of texting plan and not know it.

Or Google Talk?. That's how my brother does his "texting".

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

There are some SMS apps in the Market that will allow you to send text messages to another phone using your data connection rather than the standard sms routing.  BUT.. if the other party does not run the same/similar chat application their sms's to you could be routed thru normal channels and you would be charged for receiving text messages.

READ the details of the application, preferably from the developers web site, before you download and start using these apps less you get bill shock for SMS fees come bill time.
