Data plans and texting plans

I am confused.  What does the $9.99 data plan give me?  How does it relate to the need for a texting plan?  If I email instead of text friends does that cost them if they dont have a data plan?  If they text me and I only have a data plan does that cost me?

You can text to an email address. If they text me and I only have a data plan does that cost me? Yes, 20 cents a text or whatever the rate is without a plan.

hope those answers help.

This is just one more way that Verizon can charge fees.  The data plan is MANDATORY on almost every phone now, whether you want it or not!!

I am absolutely disgusted that I cannot purchase an EnV3 phone without getting the $9.99 per month data plan.  I don't want it, I don't need it, I won't use it!  My kids both have this model cell phone already and they weren't required to have it.  I'm paying close to $150 per month and my goal is to reduce my monthly bills, not be charged for something for which I have no use.

Also, does anyone have problems with constantly being charged for the "Get it Now" feature?  My kids swear they don't use it, but every month it seems like I have an additional $5.00 or so in charges.

Thanks that helps a lot.  Basically I am hosed.  I can either get a phone I don't want and a plan I do want (I don't want or need the data plan, actually have my web access turned off so it can't make a mistake) but the basic phones stink.  Or get the phone I want and be forced to pay for a data plan.

Not feeling the love for Verizon.  Thinking I will let my congress folks know.

I had the web access turned off on my phone so it could not access the web accidentially.  Worked perfectly.  Just call them and ask to turn it off.  If you want the block released just call and reverse it.

Something you might want to check is if your kids have any games that have been downloaded that have a monthly fee. Usually with the Get It Now games, they give you the option of the cheaper price, but you pay it monthly (like renting it) and paying a higher price one time, and owning it.

It's possible they may have even deleted the game off their phone so you would not be charged for it anymore, but  the monthly subscription to it could still be charging your  account. I had this happen once with a phone. I upgraded to a new cell phone, but forgot to unsubscribe to a game that I had to pay for monthly, and realized it 2 months later.

$5 sounds like the cost of maybe 2 games monthly, or also maybe one game and the 99 cent fee for a ringback song on a phone. I didn't realize myself until recently that even after you buy a ringback (not a ringtone, be the music you hear when you call someone's phone) you have to pay 99 cents a month to continue to have that feature.

When did that extra charge start?  I got one around November 2009, and didn't have to pick up a data plan.  I have a BIG beef, I have someone else using my phone, and am supposed to have unlimited text messaging for $20.00 added on to my voice plan.  NOW I got billed for 715 data usage on text/pics/video!!!!!  I don't even text.  My friend needs a phone and my bill is sky high.  I am so **bleep** that my information was available earlier in the day, and I printed it all out, but "billing" is "unavailable" for my cell phone now, so I can't even block text usage, plus have a bill of over $600.00!  Customer Service gave me a $230. something credit over the phone, and guess what?  It never showed up on my bill.  Instead I have all these charges for Usage Charges, Voice, Data, yada yada yada.............

I had a Blackberry Storm and got rid of it for the same reason you have, I didn't want the mandatory $60 total data package.  I have no interest in surfing the net on a phone, for God's sake.  I hate Verizon and all their passing on to customers their charges to comply with the FCC, and all the miscellaneous charges PLUS the text package that was supposed to be added on, and evidentally wasn't., so I have one humongous bill.

You got that right, and they have bought out Altell and Quest in Poky, Idaho.  Darn near monopoly, and getting worse all the time.  I absolutely LOVE my TracFone.  I know what I am paying for and no **bleep**ing surprises.

Started January 18th.  Any of the 3g phones activated on that day and after will require the $9.99 data plan to be added to the account.  If you bought and activated your phone before that date then the data plan does not apply.    We have data blocked on our phones so no one can access the internet on them so you might call and have that done if you are loaning your phone out to someone.  They can put a block on that will still let you send and receive picture and video messages just can't get online with the phone.

Text, pics and video are included in the unlimited texting so if you got charged for data it's becaue someone used the internet and you were probabbly charged $1.99 per megabyte if you don't have a data plan not because you didn't have the texting package added on.  Even with no texting package it's only 20 cents a text I think.   If they are sending the pics and videos from the net then that will cost data, sounds like that's what they did.      Mary
