Texts from unknown sender, yet they know my name

I have been a Verizon customer for over 10 years and had the same telephone number up until last year. I changed my number when I moved to another state. This new number was provided to close friends and family only. About 6 months ago, I started receiving text messages from numbers I don't recognize. The messages are not malicious and sometimes seem to come to me mid conversation, i.e. "me and Granny are going to make the pies". Oftentimes, the sender will address me by my first name in the text. It's beyond me! I don't know these people, what is this?

Have you attempted to search online to see who has the number that is calling you.  I usually just plug them into google search, though I have a couple other sites I use to check them out.

Have you tried to ask them who they are and how they know you?   I have never been able to google a cell phone number and get info about who it is.  Home phones yes if it is not an unlisted number so I would like to know how to do it with cell numbers.  Also could just log into the account and under spam controls block the number.    Mary

Yeah, no dice. I can't pull owner info on cell numbers.

Yes, I've asked two different senders how they knew me and I've been told stories about going to school with one of the senders (at a school that I did not attend) and the other said he was my boyfriend (i'm single). So weird. I will block the numbers, but it still doesn't get at how it is these people know my name.

You say it's a new #??? Maybe it's a wild coincedence and the last person who had that # has the same name as you? Have you just told them they have the wrong person and to stop texting you? You're right...weird...

I bet they have the right name but wrong person.  Next time tell them you are not so and so and don't know them and they have the wrong number.  Maybe you sound like the gusy girlfriend so he didn't realize it wasn't her or maybe she took off and cancled her phone and didn't tell him and you got assigned her number.

We used to be on verizon pre-paid for a long time.  One time we were out of state on vacation and I kept getting wrong numbers and that never happened before.  One lady wanted to know who I was as she was looking for some man and I said no one here by that name.  She called back 3 times and didn't believe me, think it was a cheating situation.  I finally told her she was calling a cell phone from NY and wasting my time and using my minutes and she stopped.  I am wondering if singnals got crossed when we went to the other state or something.  Mary

You could get someones cell phone number or you can look up a cell phone number to find out their name. I've used Ussearch web site before to get that information, but I had to pay for it. It is a legit/safe site.

To the original question, it sounds like someone has the wrong number. The first time I got my Verizon phone number I got many random phone calls. One guy asked if I wanted to buy some cherry fruits. Another person was calling for some guy. The calls stopped. I changed my T-mobile phone number. At first I got calls asking for a John & if he could please come into work. One time I got a text message that was from another state saying "hows your vacation going?"  I told the person they had the wrong number.  That settled that!

Just so you know cell phone numbers are recycled. The number that you just disconnected and got rid of will go to someone else later on. It'll say no longer available for a certain amount of time. Then after that the number is going to be assigned to someone else.  Someone had the number that you have now obviously. That is why it is happening.

That was my thought - since it's a new #, and I know they "recycle" numbers - just a weird coincidence that you happen to have the same name....makes you wonder though!!

I would politely tell them that the "Insert your name here" they know is NOT you, please stop trying to contact using this number, and if they don't get the hint, then use Verizon's safeguards to block the numbers for 3 months.  Another option would be to have Verizon change your number again - there should be no charge to do this if these calls are the reason.  You choose which would be less hassle for you - changing numbers or dealing with the wrong numbers on your current one.

Hate to bring this forum back to life, but I on the other hand HAVE had my same phone number for 8 years now and use it frequently for business.  I have never had as many random text messages as I have in the last 2 years.  For example, my area code is in the Washington DC area, yet I have received mid conversation texts from the following areas: 804, 973, a LOT from 818 (California), 434, and 530. I got all these texts in the last 10 days by the way.

The most recent one was from the 818 number and went something along these lines "yo don't go to skool bro, there was a bomb threat"... i have to admit these are becoming amusing but at the same time I am beginning to believe that there is a covert Verizon conspiracy that is randomly re-directing text messages to us helpless suckers that can't block them by any means so they can rack up text messaging bills on those people that still are paying for text messages one by one and not on the unlimited packages.

Just a thought, I am yet to resolve my issue by the way.  Any help to block @vtext.com emails that are coming to my phone by the way? I believe that will solve my problem.

Thanks.
