Funny you say that. I dont know which end of the island you were on, but my understanding was Verizon offered service on teh west end and one would have to have international calling turned on and then pay $1.99/min.
My Alltel phone now on Verizon worked great out on East End Road. Yet in talking to Verizon customers, they said thier phones never work until they go back to Christiansted. So I did not know if maybe my phone being and Alltel phone, we still could use the Sprint towers.

Correct that you must contact Customer Care to have the International Dial feature added to your line. Also, it's always a good idea to update your roaming capabilities back in the States in the VZW coverage area by dialing *228 and choosing option 2.

Also, VZW doesn't provide/own the cell network in foreign countries, and I highly doubt that Sprint and Alltel do/did either. There could be something else going on like your System Select setting in the phone. By default it should always be set to Automatic, unless you live in area where if you pick up an A or B band then you will be charged roaming on your plan. But if you have it set to Home Only, or A or B only, then your phone won't be able to connect to the towers wherever you're roaming if the provider is operating on a different band. However best not to fool with this setting if you don't know what you're doing.

Are there more than one cell carrier in St. Croix? If so, then what the poster said above makes sense if VZW has roaming/billing agreements with one of the carriers and not the other.

I never called to have international service turned on. Yet I had service. I do know Sprint offers the US VI as local service. The calls made were placed into M2M and off Peak.

Just a final update on St Croix trip. I  looked at my invoice and I was not charged any add'l fees for the calls made from St Croix, back to the states.
