Anyone who has a Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P can verify that while the phone is capable of wifi calling, that having that phone active on a Verizon account will not allow the phone to access Verizon's wifi calling service. That is only available for select phones Verizon sells which have Verizon's software installed in order to access that capability. That is why I do not use my Nexus 5X(an unlocked android device) on Verizon, the phone has the capability but is blocked by Verizon from utilizing this capability.

To get FULL Verizon functionality, it is best to have a Verizon branded phone. Unlocked phones may work on Verizon, but most will only have limited functionality. For some, that may be fine until they need the service which is being blocked. Wifi calling is one of those service for me.Smiley Happy

Ask Samsung not to charge for the feature.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

The only way to get the phone in its original form is to buy it when or if an unlocked version is available. This will also give you a clean phone without the unwanted apps. You will also most likely receive updates quicker. While Verizon has the best service, my last three phones are the unlocked versions. Since we now buy the phones at full price, we should have complete control of them.

This also gives the side effect of a device not being fully compatible with all of Verizon's services.

Oh OK, thanks for the explanation rcschnoor. I also have the Nexus 6P, the Nexus 6 and iPhone 6S Plus. I bought them all unlocked but I don't do much other than cellular calls (no wifi calls), texts, emails and internet. Thanks.

I use my phone(s) in the same manner. Unfortunately, Verizon does not get signal EVERYWHERE. I don't make "wifi calls" either, I simply make "calls". Whether they are wifi or cellular is decided by the phone depending on an available signal. Calls are not directed by the user to go to wifi, simply that if a cellular signal is not available or the phone deems it unstable it will initiate the call via wifi if that is available. Additionally, it will receive a call in the same manner if a cellular signal is unavailable or unstable and the phone has wifi connectivity. Whether or not it is a cellular or wifi call is transparent to the user. The user simply makes a call. Devices with this capability simply have the capability to send/receive those calls in more locations. That the device does not have this capability simply means calls don't connect when no cellular signal is available.

That sounds like stable coverage regarding calls. Luckily I have good cellular coverage. It's not always 4G but solid 3G otherwise. The only time I turn wifi on is to receive updates on my iPhone. Apple won't send them over cellular. But I did have my two simless Nexus' on wifi last night looking for 7.0, but it wasn't there.

If you're located there on that lake of that terrific pic on your profile, I would gladly sacrifice some cellular.

I also have good cellular coverage, however the signal does not always penetrate far into large buildings or to sub levels. Cellular also does not work well where there is a large amount of electrical/magnetic interference. Examples would be hospitals or office buildings.

I never turn cellular off and I never turn wifi off. The phone chooses which signal to use and my service is only helped by wifi, especially in buildings where NO cellular provider has a usable signal.
