"Your prepaid account has run out of funds" email from Verizon.

I received an email from verizonwireless2@email.vzwshop.com claiming that my prepaid account had run out of funds.

In fact, I have a balance of $150.  Buried in the email was a line stating, "Already refilled your account? Great."

How desperate is Verizon to resort to tricking customers into giving them more money? Pretty despicable.

This is either a scam or someone at Verizon screwed up somewhere. Both my sister and I received the same email, and we both have plenty of money on our respective accounts. In fact she had just added money to her account a couple of weeks ago.

I ran the full header through spamcop.net.  It originated from attens.net (12.130.136.108) and was then sent through moxiemail.moxieinteractive.com. moxieinteractive is a marketing company.  Oddly, attens.net is owned by AT&T.

All links in the body of the message were to email.vzwshop.com.  Whois lookup for that domain shows it's registered to Markmonitor Inc (markmonitor.com. Their website states, "Over half the Fortune 100 rely on markmonitor."

I think verizon used a third party marketer to send this email. I also suspect verizon wrote it.

Unless it was an automated reminder, which I even get, via text from Verizon even though I am on AutoPay, then it isn't to be trusted.

Doing a Whois search on that domain name, it belongs to a company called Mark Monitor, Inc. the domain was just updated on the 15th of this month. It is probably a phishing scam.

That's what I was thinking, that it was not legitimate.

markmonitor is a registrar for verizon:  www.whois.com/whois/verizon.com

It's not the first time verizon has used markmonitor.  they have also help them find pirated files:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Alert_System (describes the system)

more on that in the next to last post here: forums.verizon.com/t5/Fios-Internet/Verizon-Deny-Throttling-Bandwidth-Thats-True-Markmonitor-do-it/td-p/639205
